Gas Shotgun Shells
Disclaimer: This inquiry is FOR TRAINING PURPOSES ONLY.
Does anybody know if any of the gas shotgun shells can fit and function safely in a 12 ga shotgun? Again, I must stress, THIS IS NOT FOR GAMING. I will not be pointing a firearm at anyone, or using it in any manner which is unsafe or illegal. I know some have the fill valve on the bottom, which would likely just get dented by the firing pin, but other models have it on the side. I'm also concerned about them fitting/getting stuck in the chamber, or damaging extractors etc. For training purposes, I just want to know if any are safe to use (in that they won't damage my gun), or if they will be functional. Thanks, Alex

Madbull had a version at one point which were designed for use in real shotguns. Not sure they still make them though.
The Tanaka shells are fragile even in airsoft guns, there's no doubt in my mind they'd get destroyed if a real pin hit them.

You'd damage the airsoft stuff much sooner than the real steel.
I wouldn't worry about damaging a real shotgun extractor. A steel extractor would much sooner destroy a plastic or monkey-metal rimmed airsoft shell than take any damage itself. That being said airsoft shells probably don't fit/function in real shotguns except those elusive imaginary Madbull ones. Last edited by Styrak; February 14th, 2010 at 18:06.. |

The Madbull Shells are a hit/miss inside a real 870 the firing pin and the airsoft shells primer don't match up 100% so if you filled it with CO2 it may not fire.
They work in Benelli M4 Super 90s though, however semi doesn't work :P |

The Mad Bull Shells for real shotguns have never been released to the public.
Trixta is using the Mad Bull airsoft shells (SS6) in his real shotguns. |

Maybe they should have marked those fake ones in red.... ooh wait.
Well, it was a brilliant idea, would have been a motivation for me to get my PAL |

aZn_triXta07, have you noticed any wear on the shotguns at all from the shells? The SS6's are metal, and although I'm sure it's much softer than anything found in a shotgun, It would suck to get scratches or unnecessary wear (compared to much more mild plastic shells). I just couldn't help but be hesitant with the big disclaimer on Mad Bull's website that says : "Don't apply on real shotgun or it will damage chamber"
http://www.madbullairsoft.com/Englis...roducts_id=214 Anybody tested them in a Mossberg 500? Thanks, Alex

Wear happens instantly if you use the shells in an 870 when the shell is extracted
No wear in a Benelli M4 but you see small indentations in the firing pin |

I am disappointed to find that MadBull didn't roll out those 12ga training shells. I was very much looking forward to doing reload drills in the basement.
I'm looking into the SS6, but $65 for 5 is a bit on the pricey end for something whose rim may not hold up. How long are we thinking they'll remain functional? 100 cycles? I'm also curious at the other brand shells. I realize that MadBull developed these due to reliability concerns with Tanaka shells, but they ARE cheaper. Is it a fair estimation to say that if one functions in my M500, then the other will too? For the record, I fail to see how the shells themselves could damage the gun. I doubt propane residue is worse on the metal than carbon build up and I know my guns can handle that... The only thing that may be a concern is how the shells might break apart inside the action causing interminable pain and suffering in having to disassemble and sift out all the pieces. I also considered their use in the Benelli or other autoloaders for training. Personally, I don't like semi-auto shotguns, but mixing these in your reloads whilst training on the range is good training for failure to cycle clearing and such. The only caveat is, "Will the shell go off simply from being disturbed by the recoil?" followed by, "If one does go off in the tube, is a BB fired from one capable of activating the primer of a shell in front of it?" Viable? Last edited by phridum; February 18th, 2011 at 19:48.. Reason: Sorry for the necro, saw the Feb date and forgot it wasn't 2010...thought it was fate we all thinking about this together! |
