NATO Military Symbols for Maps etc.
When the map for OP Kandahar Twilight went up, I realized some folks might not know what a mech inf pl symbol actually means when it's on a map.
For those of you that dont have APP-6, the NATO pub that explains the little boxed Xs for inf and boxed diagonals for cav and such, here is a fine summary thanks to wikipedia. Note the wiki entry is out of date but the essentials remain the same. And if you want the real deal, well here it is too. Enjoy! Test will be forthcoming. AAP-6 (NATO) http://www.nato.int/docu/stanag/aap006/aap-6-2009.pdf Summary on Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/APP-6 Also, a cute depiction from Army.ca http://army.ca/wiki/index.php/NATO_Map_Symbols Last edited by scottyfox; July 22nd, 2009 at 20:29.. Not really relevant to games in Canada as I have yet to see a command tent at a game where a player will spend 100% of the time directing movement.
If you play a lot of Avalon Hill games (rise and fall of the 3rd reich), or World in Flames you will have learned this already from reading counters. |

I'd disagree, although I don't think we've got games that you have an 'in tent, 100% of time commander', I do believe that a consistent symbology set would be useful for the planning stages. If you have a map of your AO, then you can drop on the symbols to show at least initial deployments
Something like SOtech Tactical Planning Set would be useful. They also have some non-NATO symbols, such as Civvies, hostages, etc. Quote:
