Chicom Rig

Well, I was thinking of creating a Chicom based rig.

Essentially, I'd be combining the regular 3 pouch Chicom chest rig, do the water soak thing to allow more mags into it, remove all of the side pouches replacing them with a radio pouch and a double pistol mag pouch. Possibly also adding a mesh pocket on the inside for maps or anything else, the bottom part would most likely be a heavily modified SKS chicom chestrig.

Buckles would be added to the back for a faster equip, shoulder pads for comfort, and modification of all mag pouches, probably cut the flap off, add an elastic based system as seen on the newer open top Molle pouches.

Should look similar to this, except with all of the above mentioned modifications.

Well yeah.. So what does everyone think? Hahahaha, it'd be for an opfor kit primarily, so I'm trying to make it functional and badass at the same time.

Would the bottom magpouchs be hard to use?
especially if you fit 2 mags in each pouch on the top row.

The bottom is a grenade skirt, commonly found with some russian type "chicom" rigs called Lifchikas. They're not practical for airsoft but they do look beefy.

Actually, I took the pics off a site that had repros of the Chicom AK rig and the SKS rig which is at the bottom, minus one pouch, and just sloppily photoshopped it together..

But does anyone know if soaking the rig in hot water with a mag in it actually makes it more loose and able to fit more? If anything it should shrink it, no?

But the bottom ones could be used for pistol mags, nades, snacks, they have a lot of uses apart from looking badass .

The hot water trick does work, theres alot of guys on real steel forums that have done that trick.

You can also find 3 cell chicom rigs that fit two mags right from factory. There are alot of variants, 4 cell, even 6 cell without any grenade or oil pouches, it all depends where you get them from.

If you eye ak forums in the states alot, you'll come across rare goodies like the aforementioned, it's always neat to find a chicom chest rig variant that you've never seen before, beating others to buy them is the tricky part.

Hm, do you know a good place to get these? I've been trying my luck on ebay and classifieds, but the cheap ones are usually old as hell, or worn out. I remember reading some threads a whiiile back that you had some? Someone had also told me that you were selling some? I'm interested in anything I can get my hands on really, nothing that will break my wallet either as this is supposed to be a low-er cost project.

Im assuming this water soaking method is supposed to soften the rig enough to get another mag in? I find that very hard to believe considering the chicom I had barely fit an airsoft ak mag in it.

You need to be on real steel forums. Many of the troops in the states bring back chicoms found in Iraq to sell on forums there.

Lots of neat goodies to find, you just have to know where to look.

Look for retailers of obscure Russian or Com-Bloc kit though Red Alliance. I remember at least two.

Just look for the afghan chest rig, holds 6 ak mags. You can grab it off of rusmilitary. Way better then those crap chicom chest rigs :P (although i have 2 of those too....)

http://www.rusmilitary.com/index.htm

http://www.sovietarmystuff.com/products.php?new=1

http://redzone.com.pl/index.php?cPath=50

And power to the commies!

**edit**

But, if you're still set on modding some chicom rigs, buy lots of fabric cement, costs 3$ from canadian tire and holds stuff real good,
i modded the flaps on mine so it could accept MP40 mags back when i had an MP40.

Thank you VERY much. For the modding, I'll be removing flaps, and removing those side nade pouches are replacing them with other things.

I just fell in love with an AK I saw in the classifieds, impulse buy it then realized I didn't have any proper means of carrying the mags.

Thank you all for contributing to that thread and allowing me to put a name on the exact thing I was looking for !
