Yes, the helmet bands with cat eyes stitched in act exactly the same as any retroreflective tab - to identify friendlies.

Ones I've seen had glow in the dark squares stitched on, not retro-reflective or "cat eye". Back then anyone flashing a white light about was asking for a good kicking.
The glow was very faint but would let you see the guy ahead of you in line in the dark and stay in formation without a lot of chat With all the IR tab stuff and everone getting their own night vision it looks like the glow type has faded into history. The Glow In The Dark squares are still what are used for Cat Eyes, AFAIK. They're not supposed to be reflective.
The GITD patches aren't really visible to the naked eye but they show up with NVGs, as a mild glow: like cat eyes in the dark.

Interesting. Didn't know they had glow versions. The ones I'd seen were all retroreflective.
