Red Dot Sight Durability?

I bought one of these from e-hobbyasia and after handling it I was wondering how it would stand up to a hit from a BB. I am thinking, not so good, as it appears to be glass.

The main reason I am asking is my son wants one for his AEG because he thinks it is cool looking ("Just like on COD4") and has been saving up for this for a while. Mine hasn't been hit yet, but I would like to know if any of you have something similar and how it has stood up to skirmishing before I order one for him.

Thank you.

there is a guy on these forums who used to make custom plastic shields/lenses that would go in front. I have yet to have shot either so I don't know if they would break.

they are all good for the price. I know what your son is sayin bout COD4. Thats why I got the same RDS. It is durable, I accidently left it outside while camping and the sprinkler sprayed it all night. woke up, didnt work. Took it apart, (which was really easy) wiped everything down and it worked like a charm! As for the lens taking a bb, Im not sure but honestly, for the price its really good, and easy to sight in.

They're usually pretty tough - it would take a close-range direct hit to be an issue.

If you're worried about shattering glass, then just make him wear fully-sealing goggles (he should be, anyway).

+1, Always have appropriate eyewear. I play with guys that have 5.11 tac glasses that can take a 12 guage. And they look super slick.

Don't know about that exact model but I have shot replica aimpoints, ACOG's, ELCAN's, and normal scopes with 400-450fps guns and it doesn't do any damage at all. HurricanE holosight replicas can also take hits without breaking or scratching, most of the other clones (Huangs and other cheap Chinese ones, G&P, KA, etc.) aren't as durable.

This happened a couple weeks ago at an indoor game.

I don't know the brand since I got it free with one of my AEG's, but I'm pretty sure it could happen to any similar reflex RDS regardless of the brand

ok that is just nuts! Ive had BB's bounce off the glass from my aimpoints or scopes without problem and these are 400fps type guns. For that to happen at an indoor game?!

I've seen one of those, similar to the one in the pic break at an outdoor game. I'm assuming the shot was a max 420 FPS since that's the limit for AEGs here.

Some of the Tasco-like sights or Hurricane ones might be tougher. That other red dot looks thinner.

I almost always go for a Tasco 30mm tube type RDS.

They are made to be used on shotguns and magnum calibers.

Never got hit directly in the lense, but usually, anything RS will outlast clones.

Then again - it cracked but didn't shatter, so I'd say it's still a win for $17.99

what you could do is go to a local sporting goods shop and pick up a 30mm scope ring and cut some metal away and some how attach a piece of Lexan to it and put it in front of your lense the lexan will take the hit and save the lense

Wow.

I like that idea.

You can have some 29mm lexan lenses made in 6mm thickness.
Add a layer of thin double sided tape.
And place it in the ring just like it was a scope.

You got a detatchable lense protector.
