Barrel length question

Hi. I have been into airsoft for a good 2 years now and I think its time to trade in my kraken. I'm not asking what gun I should get but I want to know what barrel length would be good for an aeg? I want something that can match the range of most aeg's but is not insanely long.

Then you should look at "Most AEGS" You'll find the most common are m4 and AK variants. Something with a barrel of a length equivalent to that would be average.

Or you could look into a bullpup rifle. You'll get a longer inner barrel length, but with a smaller overall rifle, which sounds like it would suit your needs.

famas/aug/l85 are probably the choices you want long inner barrel in a small package

Barrel length mostly determines accuracy at any given range
FPS mostly determines range

I said MOSTLY as there is some overlap. A longer barreled gun can APPEAR to shoot farther because it has a longer EFFECTIVE range as it can have much tighter groupings at any given range even though the higher FPS gun will get the BB's farther out there. Ideally you want a 370-390fps gun with a barrel at least 450mm long.

Also hopup design has to go into range, I can outrange a KJW M700 shooting 550fps with my 320fps STAR M60E4, no idea how or why but it can.

An AK has a 455mm inner on average, an M4 363mm (damn I knew those off the top of my head, I need a break from gun work...) Really an AK is a good platform for a medium to long range weapon. If its a Kraken I recommend getting a tightbore inner, TM hopup unit, Guarder clear hopup rubber, metal bushings, bearing spring guide, and an upgraded spring (a Prometheus Ms110 should bring you to 370-390fps with that setup if properly installed.)

If you want a bullpup a FAMAS is out of the question as its ver.1 mechbox can't handle much past stock sub300fps. An AUG is nice but aren't too common and I have heard a lot of problems with them breaking parts but have no experience. A full length L85A2 has an M16 length inner but is the size of an M4A1 and can take armalite mags. Has a quick change spring to go from close quarters games to field games in under 10 minutes. They are known to have some issues with battery storage as there isn't much room for one and you probably want a large battery to turn over 400fps upgrades.

Since when?

And LUTNIT, I've had no problems with my AUG, and it was used before even I got it.

Its just that I read about a lot of AUG's that break down here on ASC. And if your FAMAS is shooting over 400, I doubt it will for long unless you've done something really special. I have seen ver.1 mechboxes blow apart from 350fps upgrades after less than 2500rnds, they are by far the weakest mechbox type with the fewest aftermarket and replacement parts available.

since i turned the spring the right way around XD. Added a tightbore barrel, and added a v2 bearing spring guide + shark hopup bucking

and mines been going good with an m120 spring in it for about 1 year now. Only thing i've seen with wear on it was the helical bevel gears anti reversal slots

I was able to get 0.30g BBs out to around 300ft in my CA M24 when I had downgraded it to 340fps, and was tweaking the hop up before the game. I was impressed! Mind you the BBs were flying past in a rough 20ft area at that distance, but still, I pretty much dispelled the fps = range myth. Hop up setting and BB weight are literally the determining factor for range. FPS just gives you the power to extend your effective range with greater wind resistance, after the 'power' drops off the hop up effect is what carries your BB farther. Hell, I had my rifle shooting 580fps for one large game, using 0.36g Bbs, never hit a thing, even though I was shooting at guys 200ft away, BBs were all over the place and the air currents didn't help either.
