Airsoft IPSC in Toronto.

Thanks to Shooting Chef sharing his IPSC knowledge and qualifications we now have built a sizable cadre of Range Officers trained to run and manage IPSC style courses here in Toronto.

The plan is to develop events and competitions and compile standings in these competitions with an eye to producing a vibrant and active Airsoft shooting sports community built on the IPSC model.

In my opinion, for all those people who seek to achieve "legitimacy" within the wider community for airsoft shooting sports, this is the way.

What could be better from a "gun shy" public perception of shooting sports than a group of people choosing not to use "lethal guns" but to instead choose to conduct their sport with "harmless BB guns"

This is in fact a very accessable shooting sport, people can get started with little invested and develop both their skills and equipment over time.

This activity is also ideal for those interested in Airsoft gun collecting and building and in developing individual skill but not really interested in skirmishing or Military Simulation.

The plan is to run a series of intro courses to get interested people familiar with the safety and behavior protocols and alternate these courses with practical shooting competitions.

I was thinking the very same thing when Phil was saying how happy he was to have positive conditions to promote airsoft IPSC.

The formation of an organization of self regulating airsoft IPSC practitioners with a national competition standard is a good step in furthering the legitimacy of our sport. IPSC with real pistols is already legitimate in Canada. If we can ascribe to the same standards of safe conduct and competition as real IPSC it would give us some logical footing in our own pursuit of eventual legitimacy.

We also might develop some closer ties to the real steel IPSC community if we can attract some real steel shooters who might want to practise some of their IPSC skills without having to be restricted by their ATT limitations or spend big bucks on 45ACP. Being able to pack your GBB to an IPSC tourney at TTAC, following your workday is something you can't do with your Glock.

Wow...That's what I can say. This is so far from what I dreamt it would become. I was just hoping to get a few friends down to TTAC for some training and shooting. Since I started airsoft I was hoping to at sometime transfer IPSC to airsoft. I didn't think the interest would be there at all but having already held 2 classes and having a list of others just waiting for me to hold another class shows that airsoft players do have the heart for IPSC.

Before anything, I must give credit where credit is due. Brian, you have really impacted the airsoft scene. Without TTAC, many of us wouldn't have a venue to play and meet others with the same interest. From brining your expertise and training to the weekend shooters, you have built a vibrant airsoft community here in Toronto. Also, Miles for giving us a venue to discuss, sell and plan our events. Great job guys.

Now, for the business...when it comes to airsoft IPSC, first let's get some suggestions on a name for this branch of airsoft. Due to legal matters, we can't call it IPSC. It's our sport so lets make it a name we'd all be proud of and agree on.

Agreed, We don't want to Upset anyone ... although these events will be IPSC styled events.. it is not IPSC.

AS I have found there are in fact a number of practical shooting associations around, IPSC being just the best known. Some care will need to be taken to define this.

Maybe the simplest is the best

Airsoft practical Shooting = APS

Toronto Airsoft Practical Shooting = TAPS

Canadian Airsoft Pratical Shooting =CAPS

Well there is a AAPS in US, which is American APS, so something along the line of APS will work well I think.

Again, I can't thank Phil and Brian enough for bringing this to the masses in GTA. As Brian said for someone who is not likely to go real steel anytime soon, nor perhaps want to go through the trouble and possibly the hassle in this day and age of villianizing anything firearm related, having a completely safe and hassle free form of practical shooting sport available in the area is a awesome. This I think might also help the sport of airsoft in general since safety and discipline is such an integrated part of IPSC style comp, which just bring the safety and awareness to more people participating in this sport...

CAPS it is...Canadian Airsoft Practical Shooting. It's simple and easy to remember. As we can see how fast the classes are growing, I will be sitting with a few of those who are qualified and will be officially certifying a group of Range officers. We'll be going through a standard of rules which are by no means written in stone. As we know, the sport is growing and this will reflect our set of rules.

This sounds like a fantastic idea to me. Sounds like it could have a real positive impact on the overall image of airsoft as a having a more legitimate use in the eyes of the public.

This looks like a lot of fun, I have a brand new Hicapa 5.1 coming my way in a little over a week. Once it arrives I'll be at the next event for sure!
