Cop draws gun over toy pistol
By PATRICK MALONEY -- Sun Media

A St. Thomas police officer drew a firearm last night on a teenager toting what turned out to be a toy gun.

The incident, underscoring growing concerns about replica guns, happened about 7 p.m. outside Balaclava public school after police were called about a young man carrying a weapon.

One of the two responding officers pulled a gun while approaching the 13-year-old boy, who was carrying a realistic-looking cap gun.

No charges were laid.

Under the Criminal Code, police can only lay a charge if a replica gun is used to intimidating someone and if the gun is presented as a real weapon.

Police were still unnerved by the incident last night.

"It's concerning, obviously," Staff Sgt. Hank Zehr said, adding some people think a ban on black toy guns should be considered.

Other communities have already made such a move: Oshawa and Scugog Township have passed outright bans on the toys, while Sarnia's police services board last month passed a motion to examine a similar restriction.

Sarnia Mayor Mike Bradley, chair of that city's police services board, has said enforcing such a ban could be difficult.

But Dave Boushy, a Sarnia councillor, said such a move could help police avoid "unpredictable tragedy," noting several officers have drawn their weapons on youths with toy guns.

"I think it will act as an insurance policy . . . to protect police from such occurrences," Boushy said in April.
It wasn't an airsoft or crapsoft gun, but it sure as hell isn't helping us any.

I am dreading the day when I read about some "kid" getting shot and killed over something like this.
Ya cant blame the cops for doing their job to the best of their ability, however with an increase in incidents like this, a statistic in the making is just around the corner.

"No Charges were laid."

Good, kid wasn't dumb, and he listened to the officers orders who drew his weapon for safety, and commanded the kid to drop the "gun" and get on the ground. Kid drops the gun, gets on the ground, officer gets the gun and sees that its a toy; and has a nice little conversation about needing to be careful with such things because they can scare other people in public. Kid learns a lesson, officer is safe, everyone goes home happy. But then the media gets it. . . **insert Jaws theme here**.

It's the media's job to spread fear, paranoia, and mistruths.

Of course the reporter had to pad his story by mentioning the Oshawa/Scugog ban and quoting a Sarnia councillor from April. I also wonder if that Staff Sgt. actually made that remark about banning black toy guns. I hate dealing with reporters as it's been my experience that what I said to them and what they write I said to them have almost always differed.

Man I remember when I was a kid, we'd run around with cap guns nerf guns toy shotguns all the time, and I lived in a cop infested area. Times have changed, and it sucks.

No guns in public, that simple. If parents aren't smart enough to say 'Billy, please don't take that gun to school.' then i think its just bad parenting. My mom would have had a fit if i took a cap gun to a school.

I agree thats the problem right there, its people taking these things out in oublic places and waving it around. The blame should be on the parents, not the cheap plastic toy from the dollar store which could'nt shift a mm by its self if it tried

No, the duty of the media is to comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable.
