Lithium Ion Battery

I wasn't sure where exactly to post this so feel free to move it.

I was wondering if anyone out there has used lithium ion batteries to power their AEG? I have several li ion cells (9V for a laptop battery) and i was planning on using 2 in parllel to power my P90. If anyone has tryed this or has more than my 12th grade electronics knoledge and has any tips for me I'd really appreceate them.

I can't even imagine how expensive that would be.

Lithium Ions have wicked long life and damn near zero memory when recharging them.

The only problem with the Lithium battery is that they come in either 3V or 3.6V cells. Hence, battery packs will be of 6V, 9V, 12V. For a stock gun, 9V might be too much and 6V is obviously too low.

Not to say that you'll have to buy a new ($$$$$$) charger for your Lithium battery.

9v is fine for a stock gun. It will shoot faster, and wear faster, but it's not that of a big problem, compared to a upgraded spring

I hope you are planning on ripping the cells out of the laptop batterie pack. If not, it will look like a junkyard crap gun.

Why bother with them anyway, just get yourself a real batterie, in NiCad. It will work in the cold better than a NiMh.

Lithium cells are very dangerous to use in this application, especially those not designed for a high drain application like laptop batteries. Violent explosion and fire will result from overheating the battery. Ordinary lithium cells are also not rechargable.

High drain lithium polymer batteries are now available for hobby use. Capacities exceeding 4000 mAh and discharge rates of 15C sustained/20C burst can be had for relatively decent prices, although whether they'll fit into your AEG is questionable because the cells are prismatic. Voltage of each cell is 3.7V so your choices are pretty much limited to 7.4V and 11.1V. I'd stick with 7.4V because with that kind of discharge rate you'll get a good enough ROF without killing your gears.

A special LiPo charger will be necessary. NEVER, EVER charge a lithium battery with a NiCd or NiMH charger. See above for consequences. I just bought a Duratrax Intellipeak ICE charger which does Lion and LiPo batteries in addition to NiMH and NiCd. Pricey but worth it if you plan to experiment with multiple cell chemistries.

While their energy storage density is high (per use life aka mAh), the Big Problem with LiI, though, is that it's got less life expectancy. Possibly only two years. Probably only three. And that's a couple of years after it's made, not a couple of years after you buy it.

Been there, doing that:

11.1v @3000mAh makes for very high ROF. I don't know how long my gears will last, but it's a lot of fun.

I was working on a low voltage protection cct, but never got around to it. LIon cells don't like to be deeply discharged or short circuited. Still, if I charge thoroughly before a game, it's hard to see running out 3000mAh with my locap play. I do need to fix the guns semi mode though. It's become double shot which often works fine, but occasionally jams in a way that can only be cleared by switching to full auto.
