Bolt carrier assembly stuck in tube and receiver

Like an idiot, I reassembled my rifle and forgot to put the buffer and spring back into the tube. I cocked it to do a function's test and now the bolt carrier group is stuck half way in the tube and half way in the upper receiver. I tried shaking it to maybe get the assembly to slide forward, no luck. I tried pumping the forward assist but it's not far forward enough for that to make any difference ie there are no teeth for it to push into. I didn't have any needlnose pliers at the time to try and pull the assembly forward but should hopefully get some soon. If it turns out that when I try to pull the assembly forward with the pliers and that doesn't work, what other way do you think I could explore to possibly get the assembly forward so I can separate the receivers? Even tried releasing the bolt catch, but since there's no buffer/spring, nothing happens.

Thanks in advance.

Edit: Oh yeah it's a VFC VR 635 if that helps

Unscrew the buffer tube.
