Measuring IR laser output?
Anyone have any idea where I could find a place to document the power of lasers etc?

Any university that has programs relating to lasers / fibre will have meters. since ou are in Kingston, there lots of opportunity there lol
Look up the way they are to be measured as well, there will be a set distance from the meter, ambient light conditions, etc.

It should be mentionned in the documents comming with your laser. If it's a replica, don't bother, the output will be aproximative and unreliable.
Safe to say that IR lasers are unsafe for the eyes. Those used in military aiming module have trainning output and operationnal output. The later is powerfull enough to burn retina and was used like so in war on gard dogs.

If its a replica its going to be a CHEAP diode.
The more power you want out of a diode the more its going to cost, so why would it be a powerful one.... If he can get it tested and it qualifies for Class 1 or Class 1M then it is eye safe.

It's the G&P DBAL. All I've heard is that it's not safe. It never came with any documentation what so ever. Just want to get it tested so I know if it's usable or not.
If it's not it's not, no big deal, but I'd like hard numbers. I contacted Professor Loock at the Queen's laser lab. Hopefully he get's back to me and he can test it for me. |

Thats awesome!
Its a fairly popular unit so I would love to see some numbers on it as well.

Ya. I've scowered the net and can't find shit. Just all the great reviews on it. One of the guys on the team says he uses it for real steel shooting and it holds up well and keeps 0.
I have also emailed G&P for specs on it, but I should have probably bought a lottery ticket instead. Ill keep you posted. |

Potentially. There must be some sort of quality control one would think.

Within reason, yes, but you're dealing with china diode who's quality control is on the level of: Does it work? Yes. Fuck it, ship it.

For instance, I can buy Apple headphones, and they are awesome. Made in china. Or, I can buy knock off Apple headphones for half the price, but they suck. The problem is that they are imitation. The G&P DBAL you've got, is an imitation of the LDI DBAL. The manufacturer of the clone has three priorities. Does it look like the real thing? Does it function similarly? How cheap can I produce it for? They will reduce the costs at the easiest of those priorities, function, because buyers know it's for airsoft and are more interested in something cheap and aesthetically pleasing. The function is sacrificed buy buying low grade IR diodes which didn't meet QC for another product, often put in grade F bins because they cannot broadcast at a spectrum within tolerance for the application originally designed. (TL: DR, their failures are sold cheap to avoid wastes on other projects.)

airsoft manufactuers don't pay people to do rigorous testing.. not do they have an independent agency carry out those tests....
I would imagine their QC is more like... "Does it look like what it's supposed to?" "Does it stand a good chance of working like it's supposed to?" "Box it and send it." |
