50+ rps build
i am contemplating a new build and was wondering if anyone has had experience with double sector gears and short stroking and if you could possibly give me some tips. thanks

1. Work up gradually to the build
2. Buy lots of pistons 3. Source the most powerful motor driven box mag you can find 4. Don't focus on FPS...but you're going to end up with a honking big spring just to be sure the piston returns forward fast enough There's far better high speed builders on this forum...but they don't usually post anything. One of our guys will be there at the TTAC convention and we'll have a couple of "neat" builds for guys to check out. |

Here are some basics you'll need:
* non-AB FET * high-speed motor (or high-torque if you're going to run a strong spring - see below) * RiotSC DSG (you need this if you want to break 40rps, 13:1 won't do) * Piston with full metal teeth, or polycarb shortstroked 3-4 teeth * low-resistance wiring * as m102404 said, if you're doing high RPS as high as 50+, high FPS might be hard to achieve unless you're planning on blowing a ton of stuff up but you do need a strong spring to make sure to prevent pre-engagement. * Good quality mechbox shell * Good quality lipo battery (>30/40C discharge) |

what i was tinking of doing for a mag is to buy one and rewire it to be connected to a lipo wired to deans.

also i have an m140 right now (new not in gun) and might get the m150. i was thinking of starting with the vfc m4 baby cqb. i have the m4 quake and it shoots about 30 rps with a 20c lipo 11.1v. it shoots at 20 rps with a 9.6 so i think its a pretty fast and probably a good start but i will try to find the highest torque motor as well cause like you guys said i need a strong spring

there's quite a lot of information over at airsoftmechanics.com about dsg builds including parts lists and stuff you need to do, it seems really in depth and you have to be very exact in your customization of the parts. There's a lot of supporting modification you need to do, superglue, dremel... and then you have to find mags that will feed at that rate.

for mags im gonna get an electric winding mag and wire it to run on 11.1 lipo

I recommend talking to Maekii on Airsoft Mechanics (and others on that forum). Maekii has many posts and videos about building 50rps+ rifles and is an accessible and friendly guy, and he is also running a lot of high fps setups in relatively cold weather (Finland). DSG setups are a very common topic on that forum. Another good guy on there is Hunterseeker5.
Make sure to read everything you can before asking to be spoonfed on their forum though, there is a ton of information on there about durability of tappet plates, swiss-cheesing, AoE, which pistons survive and which don't (SHS pistons seem to be popular), which gears to use (they will likely recommend SiegeTek/RiotSC all the way), which motors to use (likely ACM neo), etc. Please share your results here, I'd love to see super-high rps builds become more common here in Canada so that we can discuss and geek out over them. I just finished a ~32rps build and would love to have more folks to talk to about how to continue pushing it higher while keeping it reliable

You might already know this but I recommend checking out Hobby King for your LiPos, they come in a huge assortment of shapes and sizes, it's also a good place to pick up low resistance connectors (Deans or XT60 -- you should consider trying XT60 for this build!) and useful stuff like LiPo voltage checkers.

What would you like to know I have built several DSG setups and currently run one on a regular basis.

darnit, why must I be too broke to build a DSG?
it's all been said. read ASM. A LOT. everything you need to know about DSG setups has been covered. DSGs are the single most difficult thing in all of airsoft (aside from little kids) so...be prepared to do through a whole whack of pistons before you get it right (and even then...)

sector clip for maximum loading time on your air nozzle
and use REALLY lightweight gears. Lighter gears carry less momentum, it'll be MUCH easier on your motor to get that initial speed. It will also save you a few pinion gears, if the motor takes off too fast and the gears still aren't moving, the pinion gear is a common failure point. Upgrade to large gauge wiring, as big as you can go, like 12 gauge. And absolutely mandatory to have a MOSFET switch at that voltage. I'd recommend using polycarb piston instead of full steel rack, you're highly likely to do a few pre-engagement hits while exploring the setup. Better to shred a piston than a gearset. And I recommend marui pistons, at least to do your initial setup. They're cheap and surprisingly VERY tough. At 50rps you need EVERYTHING to work 100% perfectly. Even your tappet, anti reversal latch and cutoff lever springs come into play. I'd say the biggest problem you'll have is getting it to feed reliably, even with a box mag. And use bushings, bearings are likely to fail at high speed, bushings are stable at any rpm. Last edited by ThunderCactus; January 20th, 2012 at 01:17.. |

my vfc with all stock internals shoots at 30 rps with an 11.1 and 20 with 9.6. the reason why i still have stock internals in that gun is that they have been very reliable and tough. i dont feel like screwing with it too much (maybe once i start breaking stuff ill start to upgrade. i was thinking of starting with a vfc baby, i like the short barrel to get the bbs out before it loads another (kinda necessary) and the motor and internals arent half bad (i will obviously break stuff in it but ill upgrade til nothing breaks) . |
