Ideal Method of FPS Reduction?
I purchased my first AEG during the summer months, and now that the season is moving into winter, I need to look for a way to cut the FPS on it.
It's a G&P M4, and (after having an improved hopup installed) is shooting at just under 400 FPS. I see two options: A.) Spring change B.) Velocity reducer I'm not sure which way to lean on this one, as I can think of pros and cons for each. The only reason I'm considering a velocity reducer is that I'm still very green as far as dissassembly goes, but I don't exactly want to be running to someone every time I need a spring changed. Just thought I'd throw the question out there and gather some opinions.

Spring change, velocity reducers wear out after a short while.

Velocity reducers do not work on full auto, and are not an acceptable means of lowering the velocity. There are many local gun techs who can easily do a spring change for you. If you don't want to do that, you can also change your inner barrel to a shorter one to reduce the velocity. PM me on the MAA boards (Wrath) and I can give you a hand with either. I also go to U of M

Spring change, the velocity reducer doesn't work if you full auto (inherent drawback to the design). Also some places won't allow you to use velocity reducer because of those drawbacks in design, wearing out, and because if you shoot fast enough in semi it also doesn't work.
Hell, I see this as all the more reason to get another gun ![]()

Or change your mechbox shell for something that can do quick spring swaps.

Don't tempt me. I've spent enough on airsoft for a while. Startup costs aren't kind. ...it doesn't help that I keep seeing very nice things for sale every time I log on here, either. XD Spring change it is, then. Thank you for the advice, everyone. Quote:

By how much are you trying to reduce the FPS?
A shorter inner barrel will reduce the velocity by a bit. http://www.hrabri.org/barrel-length-effect-on-fps The first and third gun in that article are almost identical, however the first gun's barrel is 132mm shorter than the third gun's barrel, and the first gun shoots 97fps lower than the first gun. |

Actually something I just thought about was the SAT (Soldat Airsoft Taiwan) VVD (Variable Velocity Device). RA-Tech is making one as well so yeah.
Redwolf sells the SAT one for $100 so that might be a viable option and you should be able to relatively easily change the FPS of your rifle so you can play outdoors in summer and indoors in the off season.

a few people around here were looking at those but are uneasy with the idea of sticking anything other than a cleaning rod down the barrel

No heavier bb joke... now's my chance...
Hey, if you use a heavier bb, the you'll reduce the velocity! AHA but it's a good thing to become familiar with your gun and how it works. It can be frustrating (especially with m14's...), but some other guns are very easy to work on (F2000) |
