As a community, we just missed a great opportunity..

Sold for 100k which is "fair market value", think if everyone chipped in and we offered them 150k, they'd sell it to us? hah

oh the field that could have been... I woulda made a donation to play there

Who knows what conditions there were on that sale.

I expect there were conditions required to develop the site for an approved use.

Oh i'm sure there's tons of regulations, requirements and maintenance costs that actually WOULD make it prohibitive to any normal group.. just saying it would have been an awesome field.

even if we did just let it fall apart

This --^ is more likely the case.

An airsoft "interest group" might have found a way to purchase it, but a facility of that size would require $HUGE$ to make it safe/secure for airsoft (glass/toxic chemical remediation, etc.) and for ongoing minimal maintenance. It's the ongoing $$ that would torpedo the venture for our notoriously cheap community of airsofters. You'd have to have very deep pockets or host a shit tonne of games every week just to stay out of the red ink.

Nice to dream though...

They also said "That study found that the site does have heritage significance, and company president Joe Gallipeau said by phone Monday that he will be working within specific guidelines and restrictions to make sure that significance is looked after".

Heritage buildings are a pain beyond regular costs!

My friends and I used to drive there at night to smoke pot. Such an eerie, creepy place. Just to think the whole place was built for developmentally challenged folks. Like the Canadian govt. Had this idea to build this place and send all the handicap people in Canada there. It is humungous! It was in good shape too, from what we could see on our adventures the place looked decent. And most buildings were still in use for office space and other things. Very eerie though...

Wow, you'd think this group would be a lot more consumer savvy...

"Buyer beware" applies to real estate as well: no one wanted to pony up more than $100k for this complex? That should be a giant red flag right there.

As the governement said, considering the maintenance and/or destruction fees, it was fair market value...
