Is it the clear plastic one or the metal and plastic black one?

If it's the plastic one, you have plastic gears, IIRC. Quite easy to strip these.

Was it shooting fine before? Or out of the box it started like that?

Stripped gears or a stripped piston. It needs to be opened up and fixed.

Well if it's making a whirring sound, it wouldn't be the battery, would it? To be honest if you want to hear my opinion, don't waste another penny on it if it's that clearsoft gun. Save up for a worthwhile gun and get the parts for the new one instead.

EDIT: What I mean is, instead of buying a cheap 'smart' charger, (those little $30 ones) go on eBay and get a quality one for the future. Instead of getting a cheap 7.2v china battery, get a good quality higher voltage battery. You get the point.

No. If the battery wasn't strong enough, it would click.

Try twisting the cap on the motor, it might just be that the motor isn't making contact with the gears.
