battery heats up

What would cause a battery to heat up during use of the gun? I'm not running anything radical, and im using silver plated copper wire with deans connectors. The only thing I can think of is a short somewhere. Thoughts?

Could be the internals are lagging the battery causing it to push harder.
More than likely though a pinched/cut wire AKA short.
Could also be a cold solder joint.

What battery (voltage, mAh, size of cells) and what spring are you using?
Could be that you're just using too small a battery for the spring you have.

IF the battery has been mis handled it could be a broken joint or just a shitty/old battery.

If you have another battery, try it in the rifle and see if it also heats up.

Take apart the rifle and inspect the wiring. Try spinning the gears in the mechmox by hand to see if its snagging anywhere, that would cause the motor to bog down and draw more amps as it tries to push through the snag.

As Spawn said, could also be a poor solder joint, if you know how to properly inspect a soldering job you should notice it easily.

so maybe just test the resistance? All the batteries I am trying heat up. I have tried an 11.1 lipoly 12c 1600 mah and a 11.1 lipoly 20c 1500 mah and get the same result. Spring is a matrix 113. Gun fires pretty fast at 23 rps at 440 fps with .20 bb's.

A LiPo shouldnt heat up that is bad
i would go through the whole wiring harness and recheck the wires

Ok I think I figured it out. I wired the leads wrong. I had the positive runs flip flopped. The top wire that is supposed to go to the battery i had going to the motor and vice versa. Now I think my lipo battery is smoked because my astro blinky only shows 1 cell. eff. Thanks for the input.

if your lipo is smoking or deformed, STOP!. don't try and use it or charge it. If testing shows only 1 cell when there is suppose to be more, throw that lipo out properly.

+1 on that, if your LiPo ever gets warm, dispose of it immediately, for the love of god do NOT attempt to charge it as that will most definitely cause it to smoke.

i don't think people really know what a short really is... A short is when you have the positive and negative touching each other.. If thats the case and you did that then you shorted it out..

I dont think you know either......

•A short circuit (sometimes abbreviated to short or s/c) in an electrical circuit is one that allows a current to travel along a different path from the one originally intended. The electrical opposite of a short circuit is an "open circuit", which is an infinite resistance between two nodes.

Has absolutly nothing to do with positive or negative

fuck I hate know it all's who dont know shit

Bro you know what i do for a living?

A cut wire isn't a short when your short something out.. Easy there wikipedia.. if your positive conductor is touching the negative it will shot out.. Or burn out.. Before you slander me take at look here

What i do for a living..

http://www.fcitech.on.ca/

If you solder a solder joint on a connector cup and they both touch the signal will short

Trust me i know cause when i tear down equipment and remove wiring touching the positive to the negative say on a time code signal will cause it to short out... Causing failure..

experiment this... cut off the connector to your battery and join the positive and negatives together..

Try it out with a NIMH battery if you have one, atleast if you get a short and it heats up, you won't permanently damage the battery if you unplug it fast enough. Whereas with LiPo, if it gets hot even once, it's toast.
If your change doesn't fix it, look into rewiring your gun. And slap a fuse on that thing if you have the room! You should always have a fuse when running LiPos!

And when you accidentally cause the positive lead to connect to the negative lead you have what you just describe above: an unintended circuit where there is no load between the two poles and the current has nothing to resist it and the battery will melt. As an double E I am well aware of people miss-using the term but no need to jump someone else who said sentential the same thing but with different words. Reminds me of the sign on the copy machine in the electronics lab back at school that said “caution 10,000 Ohms”

more issues

I didn't want to start another post as I am still having issues with this gun. I took it all apart and rewired everything. I get it back together and as soon as I move the selector to fire the gun starts cycling without me pulling the trigger. When I do pull the trigger, it fires faster, so I know the shuttle inside the gun isn't stuck on fire. My guess is its arcing somewhere. Anyone know how to track this issue down? I'm going to pick up a voltage tester and see if I can find the issue.
