Tips for more "real" M4?

Hey, what do you guys do to make your M4's closer to the real deal? I've seen a few things like glow sticks, elastic bands, and that paper on the crane stock, what are all the real life applications of these, and what else could I do to make my loadout more "real"?

Depends on which armed forces, branch and unit you want to replicate/base yourself on.

My gun is replicating the MK18 Mod0, which I believe in navy seals? Sorry, I don't know much about RS and the army

Read through the SEALs thread here, and then jump over to the second one on Arnies.

This will be a good start.

I guess that your first step should then get more info on this... Maybe the best thing to make that M4 look real, is that the guy who carries it also does?
Not everyone will agree with me, but that's my opinion.

Say you're making a SEAL Mk18 Mod0 in Afghanistan, then yes, the chart on the stock could be useful (it's posted in the Navy Seal thread that Danke linked to), as well as some Krylon (hint: if you want it to look used, just apply the minimum amount of paint layers, it will wear easily). Etc.... check pictures, really thats the best references you can get. There are also a bunch in said thread.

As a rule of thumb for every gun (M4 or not): get verything that should be metal... metal, and good quality brands. For instance, look at a JG gun: the barrel, flash hider and body are 99% the same color.
Check a real gun, or at least an higher quality AEG/GBBR (say, VFC), and you'll notice different colors for these components.
Then, when all they have the correct like-new finish... use it. No wear is more realistic than wear from actual use :P

Step 1: Get PAL
Step 2: ???????
Step 3: More real M4!

What other people said, all the parts that are supposed to be metal, should be metal.

Step 2 would be an RPAL I believe...someone with better knowledge of that, correct me if I am mistaken.

That's right, AFAIK all Armalites, derivatives and lookalikes are restricted because "they look evil".

More real? Get an Inokatsu M4 Super as your base model. Doesn't get more real than that

Thanks guys, and my M4 is CA, and everything that should be metal I believe IS metal.

Now so far it's not 100% exact, for example the Magpul MOE grip, but I am kind of just looking for a close copy. I still need to find the back sight to replace my flip-up one, and get my aimpoint. What else could I change to make it more exact? I was also looking into getting a QD silencer, but not sure yet.
