Aimpoints still work with the cover closed, and if the battery was low or the light was super bright with some sort of pale or whitish yellow background that might be the only way to pickup the dot. As long as you have both eyes open it'll still superimpose on the target just fine.

Aiming is for noobs, he is just a super good shot. But that is pretty funny that it is closed

Like Danke said, bright dots against bright targets doesn't exactly mesh...ya know?
Open both eyes and use the red dot to put rounds down range

actually I have noticed in the desert that many soldiers are cutting small openings in the cover which they view the targets through. The reason is when I asked a buddy of mine who had been in the sandpit, was that it cuts down the glare off of the glass......mostly so the bad guys can't see you. Made sense to me since there is much more and brighter sun in that region.

I think it may be something of Scandinavian descent... possibly. Standard colors, just a weird pattern.
