Hooded Jackets/Shirts or Non-hooded?
What do you guys prefer for actual field use; hooded jackets (combat smocks) or non-hooded (maybe internal hood) jackets/shirts? I'm thinking of buying a smock because they look really cool and might be useful in spring when the flies are out. But I got wondering how often I'd really use a hood on a non-waterproof jacket. For those of you with smocks, how often do you actually wear the hood and under what circumstances?
2) Where can I find NYCO type smocks like the British and German smocks in Canada? Thanks all. |

Back when I had my DPM loadout, I had the S95 Jacket and Hood. Bloody excellent mix, the jacket was ripstop and water repellent (to a point) as was the hood. And the best part was that the hood buttoned into the collar, so I could take it off if I didn't want it.
I used the hood whenver it was windy or cold out, or if their was a little rain. And check your local surplus shops or eBay for smocks.

I dont know how much money your willing to pay but there is a Canadian company called Dropzone tactical that make smocks. The recce smock is of heavier weight, not unlike the British SAS smock (I think thats the one Lerch is refering to) Its got plenty of pockets and such and is water resistant. The downside is that its expensive, like $400 or so. Its really nice and MilitaryMorons.com does a review of it. Hope this helps.

No...I quite clearly referred to my old S95 Jacket
But the SAS smock has been a side-persuit of mine for a few years.

You can get DPM smocks and Flectarn smocks at Army Outfitters.
I have a DPM one, 95 pattern, very good design, large pockets, "canadian style" buttons. nice fitting .. quite wind and spray resistant. I also have a Flectarn one, Good .. but I like the Brit one better I have also seen them at Creative Outdoor up a Leslie and HW 7

Stealth suits are cats ass if you want to pony up the money for one, and you can wear them under anything. Keeps you dry and confortable, not much for warmth though, you need a good underlayer if your planning on playing in colder temperatures, if you have that you can do whatever you want and your jacket doesn't have to be waterproof, though it would suck after a while. I've also found underarmour is great for field use for warmth. But if your just looking short stints in the field, what kinda conditions are you planning to play in?
