Hm.. A finish pass is pretty much de rigeur with machining. It shouldn't be called polishing. I would guess that you use a 3 or 4 flute hogging cutter to remove most of the metal in coarse passes then switch to 2 flute end mills for the finish passes. If you wanted very precise holes for the bearings, you'd finish them with a reamer, but I think hole milling routines make pretty well finished holes without requiring reaming.

It's nice to see someone machining high end parts in North America. There are almost no airsoft manufacturers on this continent.

We use a couple of big mills – first is a vertical this is to remove the material for the cylinder. The vert uses a custom tool. Next is the machining center which is a 360 center with dual cutters.

Both units are $500k plus machines. We use machine down time to run the boxes. We don’t actually schedule time on these machines for making gearboxes – if we did the consumer cost would be prohibitive. Tolls used by the center vary based on task. The end product is very precise.

Just curious if there was any user feedback on the PGC or mthaynes mechboxes out there yet?

Also, the reason I am curious: I have a systema drop-in M120 mechbox and was thinking of picking it up to a 150. Would the systema mechbox be in any danger per se? It seems a lot more rigid than the typical Marui, but truth be told, I'd rather save it in good shape as a back-up and stock a PGC or haynes with the bigger spring if there was a reasonable chance that the systema box might crack-up with a 150. Anyone?

I've been using the PGC gearbox now and I love it.

The caveat of it is that it requires a significant amount of work to get it fitted, but once properly installed, it works like a DREAM and all the bonus features are sooooo worth the extra money and effort.
