Version 2 gearboxes
Do you guys know if Version 2 gearboxes are durable? All I know is that its better than Version 1, and Version 3 is know for its durability. So, are they decently durable? BTW, I'm planning to get an MP5 SD5.
P.S. Yea I'm a noob, this is my first post and I just got into airsofting recently. |

The stock gearboxes are durable, they work just fine. However if you are planning on adding a more powerful spring, than a reinforce gearbox and other reinforced internal parts would be recommanded.

they aint quite reliable. Once you start upgrading you looking foward problems. I know its been over 5 years I have one.

They have been known to crack with upgraded springs and in cold temperatures. I've cracked 2 upgraded mechboxes with Systema M120 and M120S springs in them during the winter. Cracking the mechbox can lead to stripped gears and pistons also.

The V2 mechbox in my MP5A5 was upgraded in December last year, with a "normal" PDI 150% spring (I say normal because there are a lot of bad PDI springs out there that put out up to 450fps at times) and I was shooting about 350fps where it should be. Only shooting I did was in the basement (winter, never shot outside) and noticed a crack inside the mag well on the bottom of the mechbox. I opened it up to find the top part had separated. So I put a Hurricane reinforced mechbox in and has been happy ever since.
So, as has been said in the posts above, they give out after a while with even a moderately upgraded spring. |

Since I'm not planning to upgrade (due to the lack of knowledge with mechanics, and low funds), I guess I'll be fine then?

For the most part. Consider an upgraded gun as speeding up the failure of a mechbox. Such as a mechbox will give after XXXXX amount of rounds, but an upgraded one will increase that failure faster. I assume mechboxes were designed to withstand X amount of impact on the front end, and I assume that a stock mechbox with a stock spring *should* last indefinitely. Increase the force of impact, you increase the age of the mechbox.
