I think you should be limited to pistol when using one.

Use whatever you can handle as long as the shield's weight is realistic. Mr Rambo will calm down when he has to lug around his 20 pounds shield on one arm and his SAW with the other.

I use a shield,
the game I usually use it for is not milsim, so I use a 6lbs riot shield and only a pistol and it does'nt seem to offer me a ''unfair advantage''. For milsim game, I would ask for a balistics shields |

A riot shield is fine as long as the folks you're facing off against are throwing pretend rocks or pretend Molotov cocktails.
If they're shooting at you with firearms it's useless. You might as well tell everyone your fairy godmother cast a magic spell on you with some pixie dust and you're now immune to bullets till midnight when you have to jump back into your pumpkin carriage. For the heavier ballistic shields they will stop pistol/SMG/Shotgun. If you want to stop rifle bullets it's going to be so heavy it's on wheels.

I would rather take cover and have both hands free to reload.
However I've played against ballistic shields in cqb situation and it was OK. The ones I saw being used in games were pretty heavy. Never seen one in outdoor games, I don't think it would be useful considering you might easily be flanked. What bothers me more are foam weapons... but that's another debate.

They can be very useful, if you know how to use them, and more importantly, your team knows how to as well. They certainly draw fire, which allows your team to flank.
At out last big op, there was a wall of shields moving up against us, all basically linked at the arm. They were almost unstoppable until someone threw a grenade from a castle, right over their line. The line fell appart, and one guy mopped em up with a Thompson lol. I got to watch the whole thing go down, laughing like an idiot. |
