KWA TT-33 Tokarev - Esthetic Photo Review with a REAL STEEL TT-33
Alright here it is - quick and dirty. A KWA TT-33 side by side with a real 1944 Tokarev TT-33 from my personal collection. First off the weight difference is quite interesting. With the magazine they are close but without the KWA is like a cardboard cutout of the real thing.
The one with the orange tip is the KWA, since back in the war a shortage of red paint forced the red army to not paint the tip of its handguns. Note the attention to detail in the backside of the mag release. The KWA's huge front sight is evident. With magazines out. You will note the real Tokarev has holes in the magazine. Thus I recommend that as soon as you buy the KWA you drill some huge holes in the magazine. That's right. The REAL steel is actually thinner than the KWA. The KWA frame is thicker probably to allow whiny imperialists to wrap their huge bacon encrusted hands around. Some markings. The random looking one that looks as if it were smashed by an ape is the real one. REAL GUN TRIGGER WOBBLE: Trigger UP Trigger DOWN Weathering of the KWA - Fine Steel Wool. Also cut the barrel back.

Hmm...
Impressive. But the finish on KWA looks very plasticky. It looks like it's made of rubber. The front sight looks bigger on the KWA one too. But looks good anyways. Thanks for the post.

The soviets themselves were oft known to slap some black paint on a gun to refurbish it. I have seen a few Tokarev SVT-40s with this....interesting refurbishment. Anyway, that's what weathering is for right? Some steel wool, cut and paint the barrel...really need a metal one so I can have it steel colored.

For the KWA its not a "problem" per se. Its their idea of a safety. Misconceived yes, but it was done on purpose.

Are you going to do a before and after of the weathering?

Perhaps I will! Others should feel free to post their weathered ones here too! It may take me a while to get to it ; )
I will weather it by comparing the real one to the KWA. Already I notice holster wear to the real one right along the front of the slide.

I guess dont judge a book by its cover, comes into play here. I was under the impression that the trigger wobble was something KWA came up with on there own. I wasn't aware this is actually on the real TT-33.
Question thought.... Everyone says the pistol looks too toyish...is the pistol plastic or is it a glossy finish to the metal sidearm?

I'd say KWA did quite a commendable job.
I am shocked, though, by how far left the rear sight has been drifted on the real steel! I know the Russians were keeping busy during the Great Patriotic War, but where was their quality control?

I have it too, the pistol is nice. I don't have the real steel, nor never handled one in real life, but it look way better in person than on any photo. The photos accentuate the grip, witch is plastic and metal (bottom) and the rest is classic KWA.
It also makes a particular noise with shooting compared to my KWA M9 PTP RAILED, almost like it is silenced LOL! I like KWA a lot because of the mag (rarely leaks if ever when they are new) and you can order parts from the US part shop via Email or Phone.... so it's cool to have support in the same continent.. |

The trigger wobbles - yes in both original (I have one too from 1944) and replica. And in both cases if you pull the trigger sufficiently hard the hammer will be released! If you replace the trigger in replica into the real one (a bit modiffied) the "half cocking" feature is working perfectly. Last edited by Walther38; August 15th, 2012 at 04:36.. Reason: addition |
