Check here for some paint stripping tread. The guy removed all the paint from an M4 receiver.
For PLASTIC parts, the best thing you can find it Castol SuperClean. It is some purple cleaning solution. Don't get any on your fingers, it hurts. It DOES NOT attacks plastics, but rubbers and latex melt like butter. It also reacts with metal (it is a strong base, so it eats aluminium and steel).
Abrasive removal will always leave some and more importantly it damages the material.
If you have a ALUMINIUM slide that is anodized, you can use some over cleaner. Spray and put in a closed ziplock bag. It will remove the color from the aluminium. Be carefull, if you leave it too long, it will make the surface really dull.
