When I was in China this summer and went to the Beijing North International shooting range and shot a russian kalashnikova 47 the bolt stayed all the way back when I was out of ammo.
I know because I pulled it back a bit more so it would slam back to closed position (which was awesome) and then inserted a new mag then racked the bolt again.
Perhaps the 74u real steel doesn't do this? i dunno... actually now that I think of it, the bolt stayed back when I was shooting the Dragunov, but i'm not sure now if it did the same thing when I was shooting the 47 (see i was shooting it in full auto and I must say I was rattled after that and didn't really check to see)

Funny... there's no bolt catch on a Dragunov or AK47.
You sure it wasn't a VZ58?
