Noob question regarding effective range and a certain type of AEG

Hi guys,

I am new to this forum and Airsoft in general. I am an experienced Milsim paintball player and would be interested in starting Airsoft but I have a few questions for you guys first, hopefully you will be able to help me.

I took a look at the FAQ, I got some answers but I have some specific questions and it relates to the effective range regarding a certain model

Stock with no upgrade what kind of effective range can I expect to have? I heard ICS are good AEGs, but I know also that alot of people do upgrade their AEG and I read that a good tight bore barrel is the first way to go towards accuracy (samething in paintball..usually stock barrel are really so so in terms of accuracy)

For example, if I am taking let say my current primary paintball marker, with only a good barrel upgrade for a total value of $500, I can put constantly balls on top of the dot of my red dot at 70-75 feet, on a flat trajectory at 280-285 FPS, I have a spread of max 6 inches, so we are talking about headshots here not torso hit (which would be more around a 12 inch grouping)

So my big question is: Can I achieve about the same kind of performance with the stock ICS M4A1 mentionned above and let say an aftermarket barrel? Is 75 feet flat trajectory in a grouping of about 8-10 inches wide (let say indoor) is way too much asked for a stock ICS M4A1.

And if it is too much asked, how much more should I expect to put on the ICS to have the same performance?

Stock you should get about that grouping at 100-125 feet, with a tightbore and good hopup rubber you can get that out to 175 feet (may need an upgraded spring, to a m100 or m110, no higher)

Wow, it is really good! So is this ICS M4A1 a good choice for a first AEG? And how much is a tightbore barrel and good hop-up rubber? Are after market barrels brand specific? Any good Canadian links for after market barrel for an ICS?

You can get decent madbull hopup rubbers and barrels for about 50 dollars altogether, they are a cheap and effective upgrade

Another thing guys, that I wanted to ask. If it is the same thing as with paintball, the quality of the projectile does make a HUGE difference in terms of accuracy.

So is there a huge difference in terms of BB quality. I am not talking about Canadian Tire stuff here, I am talking about major brands of Airsoft BBs. Is there a brand that is simply the best or they are pretty much all the same, regarding accuracy and tight grouping.

Yep, here's the trick: always use Bastards.

Be careful to order the right type of hop up unit/rubber. Otherwise have a dremel kit ready. Supposedly certain hop up units don't fit into certain guns (I'm talking about one vs two piece designs). Also get the right hop up unit for the right version mechbox you have (M4/16 use V2 while AK uses V3).

The hop up rubber is like $5 while the hop up unit itself is around $15-20.

As for barrels I believe they go for something around $40-60 CAD. You'd obviously be getting a TB barrel though (like a 6.04 or 6.03mm).

As far as BB's go you cant' really go wrong with Bastards, Mad Bull, or Metal Tech.

BB bastards are the norm for a balance of quality and price, but the best BBs i've used were KSC perfect BBs

It's obvious you don't have a high preforming gun...

There isn't MUCH difference between BBB and KSC... but BBB are superior in every way

Thanks for all those quick replies guys. So, so far it is really about the same price range as for paintball (a decent aftermarket barrel in painbtall goes for around $60-$70)

So for around $500 CAD (with the barrel and rubber upgrade) I should have something pretty good if I understand correctly?

Because I will not play as much as I am playing paintball but I want something good too. I prefer not to play than spending $500 and having a crappy AEG that has no accuracy.

OK I got it now, I was not aware that it was an inner barrel replacement. I was thinking that you need to get a new barrel period. So I keep the outer barrel and swap the stock inner barrel for the TB one?

And someone talked about the spring what is the main difference between Mad Bull M100, M110 etc.... Seeing that they cost 15$ and the inner barrel 35$, mind as well getting everything, those are cheap upgrades, so it they make a difference I would be crazy not to buy them.

my WE AWSS seems to shoot straighter with KSC .25s than with BBB .25s
