PTW 490 Dud Motors

I'm a little fuzzy on where this should go, as it's not really an ad per se.

I have a comm lathe enroute to me now. I'm going to attempt to re-work the 490 rotor assembly ala Tackleberry to see if I can revive a few of these expensive duds. It seems to be a simple procedure with the correct tools, the operative word being "seems". I don't have any dud 490's myself, so I'm hoping for some donations of motors.

I will follow Tack's procedures and see if I can revive them. If it works, you'll get a spiffy motor and all it will cost you is shipping to me. If it doesn't work, you'll be right back where you started, with a dead 490. I will need you to send the motor complete with brushes, as I'm not sure yet if any of the R/C brushes I ordered are compatible yet.

Let me know if anyone's interested in a trial.

I have done a few motors now.

If anyone has some 490s that they need done, let me know.

A cannot offer this service for the 480, unless you have the 490 brush hood kit for it.

I would prefer to get the whole lower to test the motor, but I can do the motors without it (but they won't get the same amount of testing).

So, would you still take the motor and do what Tackleberry does with it (Make it run smoother and quieter) even if it isn't broken? If so, I would be interested.

I don't pull the shims on the shaft, as you'd need to install the bearing and start using the height adjustment screw. Not everyone still has the bearing, and I can't supply them at the moment.

I solder the comm/pole junction, true the comm (and remove any arc damage) and install new brushes. They do run a bit quieter, but the 490 at it's best is louder than a 480, as it has more windings, more torque and turns a little faster.

Well, so far the production has been humming right along. I ask at this time to not send me anymore motors for now. I will be out of the country next week until the New Year. If you send me one, I won't be around to receive it.

I currently have enough parts to do 4 more motors (not counting what currently on my bench or enroute). I won't be re-ordering parts for them after they're gone, as I have to get them from the U.S.

If you are sitting on the fence about getting your 490 done, you'll have maybe a month at most to get it to me. After that, you'll have to send it to Tackleberry in the UK.

Looks like I was wrong. I can only accept 1 more motor, my parts are almost all allocated.

First one to my PM box wins.

Well I'm going to need a new tool for the lathe soon, I mean it wasn't going to last forever. Parts are not a problem to get, but I don't think I need to bring in 15 more sets of brushes for maybe a handful of motors at best. I think the interim mods I've done will last guys long enough and the new motor has been out since before Christmas.

I think I've done about 20 motors so far, pretty decent for a $150 lathe.

How much you got?

For you, it will be very expensive.

OK, well at this point, my brush supply is all allocated, and I will only get enough life out of the tool for the lathe to finish what's booked, with some coaxing.

So, I won't be taking in any more motors for service, unless you supply brushes. Empire stocks lots of SuperMAX brush sets with springs.
