Upgrading the APS Type 96 (was: 7mm and 9mm spring guides. What's the difference?)

Hello,

Sorry if this question sounds newbie-ish, but what's the difference between a 7mm and 9mm spring guide? (other than the obvious of course :smack: )

The reason I ask is this: I'm planning on making a comeback to airsoft, but before I do, I need to upgrade my stock Maruzen APS Type 96 BA. When I came across spring guides, I saw 2 types: 7mm and 9mm. Their descriptions weren't helpful at all as it just says "for 7mm [9mm] springs" :smack:

Obviously I would have to buy a spring that matches the spring guide, but what's the difference (advan./disadvan.) of the 2 different diameters?

Difference is roughly 2mm.

Lol, sorry, I had to. Nutshell, APS2 type springs come in two sizes, ID 7mm and ID 9mm. Up to (not including? Grey area for me) about a 140 (meters per second) the spring's inner diameter is 7mm, above that, such as my Laylax 150 spring, has a 9mm inner diameter. Hope that helps.

So, stock to 130 would be 7mm, above that would be 9mm. Best to buy one of each and then you have full access to all the springs and ratings.

And make sure you buy parts that are either meant for the L96, or has internals compatible with the APS2 (such as piston, spring, guide, etc.) They (APS2 parts) will be listed as PSS2. Avoid anything labelled as PSS10, they are meant for the TM VSR.

Looking at www.wgcshop.com, I found some PDI springs (couldn't find Laylax for Type 96, only the VSR) but it doesn't say for Type 96 specifically but does say for APS2, so it should right? I'm also assuming that the PDI 150 is rated the same way as for AEGs so it shouldn't bring me past 450. =)

One last question...um...for now. What's the "bolt handle" for a stock Type 96? The reason is I see some descriptions for upgrade parts specifying that it's for a 12mm bolt handle so now I'm worried that there are different bolt handle sizes to worry about as well... =|

Honestly, I have zero experience with the L96, so I can't answer parts of your question. But I *think* an APS2 spring should work fine in the L96.

PDI springs are pretty much all percentage (unless they suddenly changed), so a 150% spring should, *in theory*, net you about 50% more fps from the stock fps, but that never made any sense to me for AEGs either. If it was a 150 spring by another company, or PDI has gone with the norm and use meters per second, then a 150 spring would be ~492fps with 0.20g.

I'd suggest a Laylax 140SP PSS2 spring for your gun, should get you about 440fps, a bearing spring guide (remember, I'm not 100% if the 140 is 9mm or 7mm) would add roughly another 15fps, and a tightbore might get you another 10fps. After several hundred shots the spring will weaken somewhat, and drop your fps to a respectable level without being unsafe. Or you can put in a 130 spring.

I strongly suggest the Laylax springs as they are easy to cock and put out great consistancy and velocity. PDI springs are a very stiff annoyance. I bought a new PDI 300%, it was brutally hard to cock and shot close to 600fps. Eight cut off coils later it was a bit easier to cock, but still shot around 500fps. I bought a Laylax, beautiful spring, and consistnt from one to another (something PDI can't even come close to claiming the past couple years).

I'm finding it hard to find upgrade parts for my Type 96 (or maybe I'm just looking in all the wrong places), but I'm a little confused about the bolt handles...some cylinder sets say specifically for 12mm bolt handles, other say for 8mm bolt handles. How can I find out which one is mine?

Also, if anyone has any good suggestions for parts (i.e. CDN_Stalker's suggestion of Laylax springs), I would greatly appreciate it.

Laylax parts are top quality and they have been doing it awhile. Its what most sniper rifles get upgraded with.

For APS II, get a 9mm, thats what I have one mine now, I had a 7mm and it wasnt the right one.

Basically if there is space between the spring guide and the spring, that spring guide is incorrect. You want a tad of resistance when inserting the spring guide into the spring, meaning no space inbetween.

the springs used for the type 96 have two inner diameters, 7mm and 9mm. you need the 7mm for springs that have 7mm inner diameter like 130sp and 9mm on springs that have 9mm inner diameter like 150sp and up

WGC or UN Company will have them (is where I bought my Laylax 150 from). Don't bother looking for CA M24 parts as far as guides or springs go, you need to buy the PSS2/APS2 parts (and avoid anything labelled as PSS10, that is for the TM VSR and won't fit).
