The FAMAS, Customizing it, and beginner questions....

Ok well... ive search all over and havent managed to find any really direct answers. Although some questions where answered.

But anyways, a buddy showed me about Airsoft this morning. Being a paintball player myself, I was immediately intrigued. I looked for more info and found this may be the "perfect" sport. As Paintball failes to meet my dactical desires or realism im looking for. Nor can PB be used as a "hobby" in the sence that the guns can be modified to any great extent.

But anyways, I began checking out guns. Im gonna attend a game sometime over the next 2 months or so and take a first hand look.

But as for guns, I found 2 I particularly like.
The G36, and the FAMAS.

Personaly, I would prefer the FAMAS however im worried about its customizability.

It seems there is no strap hooks, no sight mounts, no bottom rails etc.

Now, as I understand, if your good, and know what your doing, you can mount just about anything on it.

As far as I can tell the top handrail is mounted directly into the body of the gun.

So... lets say, hypotheticaly, I got a FAMAS.
Would I be able to remove that handrail, add in another sight.
Change the hardgrip perhaps
As well as add something to the bottom, M203 maybe, or a shotgun?

Just wondering what the possabilities are here.

I also understand the FAMAS inner workings are very complex? If this is true, is it really that hard to customize.

One last question, is a FAMAS really a "beginner" type gun? Ive seen reccomendations for beginners to get MP5s or w/e. But I plan to be more "serious" about it. If the games I boserve turn out to be the real deal. Such as tactical, team based, semi-realistic combat. And so I would like to get a gun I can really work with. Partly as a "hobby" if you will for customizing it. Im talking about the kind of weapon that if im still playing years down the road, I can look upon it as my most trusted friend. Maybe ill have other weapons, but I would always come back to the first one that I know is reliable etc.

So yeah... Any comments?

(Plz dont flame, my last "noob" post was)

You kinda should try out a few guns before you decide to get one since you are located in calgary if you go to laser trek on monday, tuesday, wednesday, thursday,or sunday you can go and spend 15 dollars for field fees and 15 dollars for a rental and 25 for bbs if you need them.

it took me awhile before i figured out which gun i wanted to get i went with the g36a

but the famas and the g36 are good starting guns the famas is a lil bit awckword to hold some find it the g36c is kinda comfy to use

if your looking at upgrades for the famas
you can make it into a
l85-a1 or a2
support style or cqb style

the g36c you can but conversion kits
like the
G36a,G36k,G36m,G36v,Sl8,Sl9

it all depends on what you are willing to spend your money on
its not a cheap sport its really expensive

Sweet. Got an adress for that place?

Im actualy not in Calgary yet. Im moving up there in a week(Coincidentaly).
And its cool because the whole Airsoft thing isnt big down here. In fact, I had never heard of it until this morning lol.

But yeah, I dont mind the awkwardness of the FAMAS. As I also wanted to add in a new butt and grip. So that would be taken care of.

Im just wondering how easy it is to customise?

I also think I may just go with the G36 because of that reason alone.
Its easy to work with, or seems so.

But im not going for any particular variants. I figure once I play enough with the base gun to know what I want, I can just mod it as I feel like lol.

But I would really like to go with the FAMAS. I actualy love the way it looks, besides that handgrip that appears to be mounted into the chassis of the gun itself. And it doesnt like like bottom/top rails are easy to mount either.

Basicaly, what I wanna do in more summary is this...

Bottom rail with M203/Shotgun/Flashlight(Havent decided wich one yet)
Remove top hand grip, add in new rails, and put some kind of dot sight in.
New grip
New butt
New barrel for boosted accuracy
Flash hider

And I think that will be good. I also wouldnt mind keeping a bipod but probly not possible with an M203 huh?

Also I dunno about some of those. I wanna make my gun definately geared for CQB. So... I dunno about the new barrel etc. Like, I want it to be so it isnt so disadvantaged at ranges. But more geared for CQB. The flash hider and new barrel may interfere with that. So yeah, I would have to see after playing a bit.

But yeah. Just an idea

Peace

The famas is one of the oldest AEGs out.
Some really like it, but when compared to other AEGs, its really not a bright star.
Unless your forced to by price, Id stay away from the famas. Compared to other guns, its body is weak and its internals are nothing special. Its a version 1 mechbox whereas a G36 is a version 3.
If guns were cars, the famas would be a chevette and the G36 would be the corvette.
I highly recommend a G36.

check this thread http://www.airsoftcanada.com/showthread.php?t=27739 on what people recommend as the "best aeg", its a great thread with lots of info.

Honestly, check the Games and Events section, go see first, ask questions there.

The rest? Read the Information section.

On the contrary, the Famas internals ARE special - meaning replacement parts are a bitch to find. Motors, gears, bushings.....all are unique to the Famas and many parts aren't interchangeable with the newer V2 and V3 mechboxes. If you break something internally, be prepared to shell out some serious cash for repairs.

I've used a FAMAS pretty extensively - and I'd say go with a G36 if those are your 2 choices.

Well. Yeah, im going to be going to a game or 2. Hang out, maybe fire off a few different ppls weapons, etc.

But yeah. Maybe I will go with the G36 then.

Those are prettymuch my 2 choices.
I guess I could go with something else. Such as the UMP.45 or M4...
UMP .45 doesnt meet the range/accuracy im looking for, and the M4/16... well, call me unarmerican, but I hate the M16.

I guess M4 is alright, it fixes most reasons why I hate the M16(Its size), but you know, its like, the M4 is still the same gun, just shorter.

But on a size note. Is a sidearm really neccassary for the first games?

I mean, even those sidearms are reasonably pricy.

And I can see this running me a good 1k just to get started.

Sidearms are not necessary. All you need to do is what I told you; go to a game to see first. Rent something, try different guns. Then you will know.

Really, it does work, try it. Saves tons of guesses.

Like an old sage did say , everything fits with a Dremel. You want a M203 on the Famas ? Go for it. I do think the Famas is a beautiful gun. My passion for the Légion Étrangère helps , though. But , as stated , the G36 is a real good weapon , the first choice for a lot of airsofters out there. Can be customized as hell. In fact , all AEGs are about the same internally so go with what you think feels the best in your hands and love the look mostly.

I'll back 100% the G36 as well. FAMAS's are a pain to work on ( I have one in the basement that refuses to do anything useful) and butt ugly. Some even have that little horizontal flag pole in front of the cocking handle to mount your hanky if you like.

G36 is sexy as anything, and has tonnes of upgrade potential, ability to hang anything you want off it (ok, except a white flag) and is rugged as anything after upgrading. Seems the only person to break a G36 mechbox after upgrading was Vondnik, and that was after about 300,000 rounds.

I gotta admit this is far from being funny. Those old bad jokes over the French army suck. If you're such a superhero , why don't you try entering the Légion Étrangère , just to see who's taking out the white flag now...

Heh. The french are tough soldiers actualy. Its mostly the leaders that suck(No offence anybody ).

But yeah, maybe the G36 is a better option then. Because I wanna go for heavy customization.

I still like how the FAMAS looks, or would look withought that top bar that is. I hate the handles on top of any gun. And plus, the FAMAS is a prettier gun than the M16 anyways

But yeah, as ive said(And yall keep saying) I will be going to an event sometime over the next couple months and seeing what its all about.

I guess if your good you can put anything you want on any gun, but im gonna be a beginner lol. So I better not.

Thanks for all the help yall

Whoop-dee. Those jokes are around for a reason, but not because they are only funny. You explain that little horizontal mast that folds out to either side of the FAMAS to me, and I'll retract my hankie holder statement. Next thing you know you will erringly call me a racist because of it. Lol
