Red dot sight adjustment

OK, I recently bought a red dot ACOG style sight for my M4. I attached the sight to the top rail (where the irons originally were). I did look for a similar question and noticed someone else had the issue of the red dot being smack in the center of the front triangular sight.

I too am having this issue and I was just wondering what people generally do about this? Do most people just look past the front sight or buy a flip up front sight? I also saw that you could buy an elevated rail raising the altitude of the sight itself.

I have yet to game with the sight on so I'm not sure if it is any more difficult to play having to look past the triangular front sight. I'm just curious to see what other people do in regard to this.

The red dot should sit on top of the front sight post, so you can either use it as it was designed, or install a flip up type front sight post.

I'm pretty sure most people using RDS will just stop using Iron Sight altogether.
However it's still good to have some BUIS (back up iron sight) in case your RDS fails

Using a RDS along with iron sight is called co-witnessing, you can search and read on the matter. But you don't HAVE to use iron sight in conjunction with the RDS.

Personally I prefer using the RDS alone.

Edit: an advantage of having both is to Zero both of them at different distance and using them accordingly

So make sure you are using the red dot with both eyes open, some folks forget that.

With the dot and the regular sight still in place you will find your brain prints the dot on the target and ignores the sight. The flip down sights and gas blocks are an option if the look bugs you but what ever you do, don't saw off the irons. And don't laugh because players here have done that (OK laugh a bit).

So first zero the irons because you can be sure that at some point the battery in that sight will die and leave you high and dry. Then zero the optic.

The term for this is co-witnessing the sights, and it is the pro way to setup.

OK, thanks for the answers. I will adjust the iron sights to work in case the RDS fails. However I am not exactly understanding what I should do about that front triangular sight? Is there a way to remove these things? From looking at the iron sight at the front, I do not see any way to remove it.

Danke, that is a good suggestion. I will definitely keep both eyes open and consider a gas block or flip up sight.

Without knowing what brand of AEG you have there it's hard to say how to take the front sight off.

As a rule most are held on by set screws. The catch is that chunk also holds on your foregrip. You will need some sort of gas block, something to hold the grips in place, maybe an outer barrel, then you may find you want a rail system, and it goes on from there.

There are some pretty good descriptions on here of rifles modified like that and a couple good right in Canada retailers who can get you the parts. Make sure you know what you need, and that you have it all on hand before you start this. I'm guessing you have one AEG, and if it goes down because of some part that won't be in Canada for six weeks you'll be bummed out.

Thanks danke. That's a good suggestion. I looked into some things to help with this I came across risers. The one I'm looking at is here: http://www.airsoftatlanta.com/UTG_Se...nt_p/52052.htm. Do you think this would help to just raise the sight up? Not sure what it will look like on the rifle.

I also found this sight from Leapers (same manufacturer as my RDS): http://www.airsoftgi.com/product_inf...roducts_id=964. I don't know your experience with this type of thing but do you think it would be enough to raise the RDS just above the front sight? I don't want anything sticking too high but at the same time aligning with the top of the triangular front sight. It's just a little hard to see from looking at the picture.

Also, do you know what it means when it says "See thru riser mount"?

It means there is a channel underneath the mount that you can see through to use the iron sights. Typically it only works with low set iron sights such as found on rifles.

Is your M4 flat topped or does it have a carrying handle? If it has no handle you can put one on, and then mount the optic to the carry handle. That will put it well above the irons.

Still, try the current setup on the field first.
