So something odd today has confused me. I picked up a crono from my paintball buddies to test out my sniper rifle, to figure out my MED.... I cronoed with .2g Madbull BBs. I clocked in a 410fps. Not bad right where I want to be...

But than I popped in some .3g Straight BBs... cronoed... 450fps? meaning .2g should be clocking almost 500fps..... are straight BBs just that much better than madbulls? Or did I break physics.

Sniper rifle is a Spring VSR.

did you take multiple shots? i know some chronos are really sensitive to light. so usually after shooting about 10 shots, i disregard the highest and lowest reading and get a average between the other 8.

no its a good crono. Big red Radar crono..... Now it does only go up to 500fps... I wonder if its actually not seeing the .2g shot... hmm lemme try a .28 or .25.

yah I took about 10 shots with each weight. and again its a radar crono not one of them other ones.

.28g were slightly quicker than the .3. .25g was sitting at 470... so I have a feeling its breaking the 500fps with .2grams. Crap... didnt want it that hot.

if its a new gun/spring. let it sit for a little. plink with it, and then re test, the spring wil sedttle down a bit, not much, but depending on where you want you gun to be, might be enough

I was hoping to be closer to 450 so I don't have an extra 50-100 feet of MED...

Last I checked, big red radar chronos don't seem to work very consistently for our tiny 6mm pellets. They may have improved, but I used to see quite a lot of shot to shot inconsistency last time I used one. I confirmed that my gun wasn't itself inconsistent by first testing it with an optical chrony.

Agreed, usually when there is such a variance in testing one should first assume the testing equipment is faulty then explore other variables. Find a friend with a superior chrony and try again.

I agree with the above. If it's a radar chrono like you stated, and only rated for 500fps, it's likely unable to calculate the shot, and it's 'seeing' an echo, thinks that's the bb, and gives you the readout as such.

alright I'll try and find another chrono. I grabbed this from my old paintball buddies team to do some testing. Whats a good chrono? I thought Radar was the way to go.

For paintball, it's fine, given the combination of larger object and slower velocity.

Try measuring a .45 shot from a 1911 with a police radar gun.... same idea.

The Big Red is a radar based chrono, which will not give accurate readings with small airsoft projectiles (as you've noticed.)

Use a light based chronograph instead (pretty much all airsoft chronos are light based.)

I personally prefer the chronographs made by Xcortech, CED, or Shooting Chrony.

Madbull and Guarder also makes decent ones as well.

There's at least a dozen airsoft specific models out there.
