Long Scope vs ACOG/red dot
Considering the average engagement distance. Do people find scopes with 3x-10x zoom effective in airsoft? Do some people find a red dot or acog more appropriate even for a sniper?

4X is the maximum for airsoft. Over that, it's mostly for snipers and not actually for engaging but much more for spotting and observation.
A red dot or ACOG would be an abomination, looks wise, on a bolt action. I'd beat to death with my stock anyone I see with this.

ah ah
joke aside Conker's right. cheap replica scopes tend to fog in the rain, you're better off with a real one, there are many cheap RS scopes.

I personally shot my own team mate multiple times if I saw a red dot on a BA airsoft gun. The maximum I ever used for engagement purposes was 5x, but i use the magnifications in multiples of 40 feet or so. 3x100-120ft, 4x=150-170ft, 5x=185ft+

I used to see people with rifle scopes on their M4 and it didnt look good, nor was the function their. A rifle scope on an AEG is pretty much pointless. From actually handling an M4 with a scope, i can say your accuracy is less with one, then if u just used your iron sights. Watching people spend hours sighting it in is also not worth it. Stick with an ACOG with 1x or 2x magnification. I had a replica red dot ACOG for a while and i loved it. It also looked much better on my M4.

I use a 3-9x rifle scope on my M4. However my M4 can reach out and hit people at well over 250 feet. I mostly keep the scope on 4x like an ACOG, it has a very nice eye relief to allow for this, but for spotting/stubborn players who wont move, its very handy for me to have the extra magnification to really thread some shots through small spaces.
Theres exceptions, my M4 would be one, others, they really have no use other than for spotting.
