Actually I've been to Afghanistan an spent a lot of time in Zhari/Panjwai an I didn't see 1 Pakol. From my observations the Pakol isn't very common in Southern Afghanistan. From what I remember hearing was that the Pakol is more common in Northern Afghanistan not sure about the Western or Eastern Provinces.

Panjwai is southern Afghanistan, from all the photos and accounts I have seen, they are common amongst villagers in the eastern side of Afghanistan, especially around mountainous regions of Pakistan and the Khyber Pass. Iranian Balochi's wear something similar to a Pakol, but not in the same style.

It's mainly used amongst either tribal men in Afghanistan, or elsewhere by Mujahdeen, hence why there are Islamic Bosnians sporting the pakol in the picture I posted. Soviet's were also seen with Afghani Marxists wearing Pakol's throughout the invasion in numerous photos.

Yes, I know Panjwai is in Southern Afghanistan. I've been there, an thats what I was trying to get across in my comments earliar. Just saying I didn't see one Pakol when I was there.

And what you are saying about them being common certain tribal areas an in the mountains is what I've heard aswell.

Anyways, I still don't know what the hat that I saw the majority of guys wearing, but here's a pic of it

This is just insanely wrong. No Bosnian Muslims wear pakul.

Some of foreign fighters in last war had them, but this picture you poster is not Bosnian Muslim soldiers or even foreign mujaheed. In picture they wear russian gear, and standing next to helicopter, guy looks like Afghan or Pakistani. Bosnian Muslims didn't use russian camo, no pakul hats. And on other hand foreign fighters didn't had any helicopters.

Where did you get this from? :banghead:

I got it straight off another forum, he has a bunch of pictures of DDR gear in usage, I have never seen any Afghans or Pakistani's in Russian camo, or that have access to helicopters.

DDR gear was mainly exported to Turkey and the Balkans after the fall. I still stand by my first observation. The guy behind him seems to have lighter toned skin and a reddish coloured beard, more likely to find guys like him in the Balkans versus Afghanistan.

I don't understand what observation, I'm not commenting anything about DDR gear. I'm just telling you the fact you can not go and say look this picture it's Bosnian Muslim wearing pakul.

It's like I post some Mexican guy with sombrero on his head and say look, this is Canadian MP. Guy on your picture don't look European at all. And just his style can say this is far from Bosnia. You are right about DDR gear, but this photo explanation you give here is wrong. NHF

BUT looking at other guy I could say maybe Chechenya or US SF operator.

This is a Russian mini-series on one of the various wars in Chechnya. It's all in Russian, and good luck finding English subtitles, but it does give some nice impressions of both Russian and Chechnyan soldiers. Santa costumes not withstanding.

bumping this thread to see if anyone else has another idea

Just acquired a new AK and assembling a Chechen loadout at the moment. It will look dirty and mismatched which is perfect.
