I had the chance to play around with my team leaders brand spankin new PTW MAX yesterday, and let me tell you, I can see where the extra cost comes from. That was the finest airsoft gun I've ever handled. Three round burst worked like a charm, semi was nice and crisp. I was really impressed with small stuff, like the mags have realistic weight, the fire selector switch had such a nice, positive engagement between modes, and it sounds NOTHING like any other airsoft gun.

Is it hugely expensive? Duh. If one comes up for sale when I've got that amount of cash ready to spend, will I buy it? Yes.

I'll get one when I have the cash.
The only tiny problem I have with the PTWs is that they only come with a 120rds mag. (Please correct me if I am wrong, but I can't find any other choices for PTW mags.) I like to change mags when I play(low-caps user) , it add to the realism. With a 120 rds mag, thats too many rds. Granded, you have the choice to put in as many rds as you like. But in a milsim and such, organizers usually limits the amount of rds you carry into the field by limiting the amount of mags you can carry. And a 120 rds mags would be consider a Mid-cap, and therefore you would be only allow to carry 4 if the ammo limit was 500 rds. Whereas with a 69 rds lo-cap, I can carry double the amount of mags, which means I get to change mags more often which add to the realism for myself.
Either way, I think the PTWs are nice and are worth the money, I'll get one when I have the cash.

You can get 30, 80 or 120 rnd mags. The 30 and 80 are reserved for Military/LE customers only, but you may be able to get them from the U.S..

And yes, my MAX M4 s THE BEST AIRSOFT GUN IN THE WORLD. I know because I've owned pretty much everything else at one point.

Yes, but assembled PTW + mags + cylinder kits + batteries and you're lucky that you don't spend $3500. It's not like if you don't want to buy their mags and cylinder kits, that you can just find a cheaper manufacturer.

$1500 is just a small start and it grows very fast from there. I know all too well.

I agree mcguyver, after letting a few rounds loose on my team-mates at the weekend, I have had to purchase a Blue, Gold and Black cylinder for my PTW Max.(Might as well have all of the options available to me in regard to FPS) At 175$US each, the cost of owning/operating a Systema PTW for all occasions, adds up pretty damn quick.

I hear the rifle has problems with sensing the final round. It sometimes ends with 2-3 rounds still left in the mag. There's been other complaints, but those one apply to every other manufacturer.

Also, I'd probably be too tempted get the rifle in Hong Kong on my vacation for around $1000 and find someway to get into Canada...

They are not $1000, even in HK. They will still cost you $1420 - $1495 U.S. for a MAX. I bought mine for $1750 Canadian and even if I did order it direct from Redwolf, it would have cost me the same money.

Why not just import a MAX directly? If you can sweet-talk a customs agent into letting you bring one in directly, why not. They are designed to shoot 150 m/s and the limit that they've established to not be considered a replica is 124.5 m/s. They've beaten appellants to death with this number for other guns, why not this one? Likely, you'd have to surrender it to the RCMP for ballistics testing and wait perhaps a year or more to get it back. Then you'd have to be prepared to risk your investment with no guarantee of success.

If you're a gambling man, go for it.
