How to identify between TM M4 New and Old Type?

I recently got a Tokyo Marui M4A1 in a trade. I'm having some trouble opening it up (I can't open the upper receiver after I remove the pins). I'm wondering if anyone would be able provide some details that will help me identify whether the gun is a New or Old Type M4 (and perhaps how to open the upper receiver without destroying something)?

The previous owner installed a SIRS to replace the original handguard and the gun also seems to have the TM M4 S-System outer barrel which has a portion of it cut away for a battery to fit in. However, the gun still has the original front and rear sight (made from the original carry handle, I'm guessing), so I'm pretty sure it was originally a vanilla M4.

Much thanks!

Take off the handguards.
Check and see if it's a multipiece (3 piece) barrel or one piece barrel.
The one piece barrel is the new type.

That's if it's still in stock configuration.

S-Systems barrels are one piece.

And they are proprietary.

He didn't say S-System. And if it was an S-System it would be pretty obvious.

???

You can't fit a S-System barrel on a non-S-System upper. It's not using the Delta ring. Simply a screw.

Here are some pictures I just took. They might be able to help you guys help me on identifying the gun. Sorry for the bad quality, I don't have anything other than my crappy cellphone camera. Many thanks for all your posts so far.

Is it just me, or is that an S-system?

Well, I'm not sure exactly since it has the original M4 sights on it and not the flip-up ones the S-Systems are supposed to come with. I'm pretty sure the TM M4 S-System also comes with different trades on the lower receiver too. It's difficult to determine what the gun exactly is... :/

Alright, I managed to open up the gun and it appears the upper receiver has those reinforced metal tabs. Looks like it's a New Type!
