They could be doing simunition training, or something...
Looks like any mesh face mash though, not really anything 'interesting' or special about it.

It could be simunition. I hear they're pretty energetic; how tough are the NVGs?
Could be something with less punch.

Possible they are using airsoft to practice VBSS operations, less cost, less chance of damaging equipment on a functioning ship. Plus they can use all their issued equipment.

It's been pretty common knowledge for some time now that military units and police departments (though never heard of seals using them) are using airsoft for training. It's cheaper and safer then simunition.

those are AN/PVS-15s, much more durable than the ANVIS.
I would guess they are using airsoft for VBSS training/drills.

Below are some pictures showing multiple SF units from different countries during a training event in Germany. You can see its simunition via the blue bolt, the masks are worn to protect from the simunition. Also note on this picture the blue paint the guys have on their gear. I've seen guys use simunition with nothing more than safty glasses. There are a buch of "special ops" vids from discovery channel on YouTube where they use simunition.

Maybe its just a simple as protection from random environmental items. Or thrown rocks, hot casings, and etc.
Hell sucking in a fly at the wrong time could kill you.

That was for the benefit of the TV show. They were constantly removing their eye protection, too. I guess the "Don't do this at home" disclaimer at the start of the show is for people like you.

In Canada, we do use Simunition with only ballistic glasses if it's a paper targets or if the targets can't shoot back (No weapons, blanks, etc)
Maybe it just a safety rule of certain countries to wear the mesh when Simunition is in use. Last edited by -Per-; October 21st, 2014 at 16:18.. |
