Yeah, the rubber pad on the 4-position is probably the best solution for shouldering I've used. Makes it real easy to maneuver the gun without a supporting hand when you need to, a lot better than my IMOD, although it's still nice. Something to do with the shape of the pad grips way better.

In the pic of guys dragging someone in a flowery ptinted sheet, do my eyes deceive me, or does the operator have the grip safety on his 1911 taped down?

Commonly done also to hold the pressure pads for the SF610

I almost always see a lmt crane stock on 416s these days - is there a reason for this? or is it just operator preference.

The pic is part of OPERATION TAPEWORM, when part of TF 121 took down Uday and Qusay. From the looks of it, the 1911 does look like it is taped. It does not surprise me that these highly trained Operators would mod any kit/hardware they have.

This might've been posted on here already, but this whole thread is full of great ACE and DEVGRU photos, among others:

Something interesting i don't think anyone has touched upon is that in the book Black hawk Down...BOOK...it mentions that they use hockey helmets for the sole purpose preventing operators from bumping their heads on the field.

Yes, and you see the same thing in the movie; the Protecs are often referred to as "hockey helmets"; you may also have read in the book that they rethought that policy after realizing that one or two of their dead (Shugart or Gordon among them) were shot in the head and may have survived (a little longer, anyway) had they been wearing ballistic protection on their noggins.
