Unless we are playing a game with a lot of roleplay involved, I'll never pretend to be desoriented by a weak flash and quiet pop. I prefer to fear the Airbang grenade and wear hear protection. That's why I bought Peltor soundtraps.
That's my attitude, too. Fear the flashbang! While keeping IRL dangers in the forefront of our minds as well. I'm willing to shell out big bucks for a safe compromise!

In CQB I've found my Thumper TG6 to be a very effective and completely safe weapon. It handles and deploys like the real thing so you can tie the ring to your gear and rip it off your chest just like in the movies. I was stacked up with another dude and we had enemies around a corner. I deployed the TG6 and as soon as it blew we rushed around with guns blazing. He told me it was the absolute coolest experience he'd ever had CQBing.

Yes the Thumper is expensive and you have to buy the reloads. But it sure is fun, and best of all it's LOUD!

Isn't that a good way to get yourself hurt in real life?

Bringing this thread back into the daylight.

I went down to the local photo developing store and asked if I could have all of the used cameras they throw away. They had one to give me on the spot and told me to come back tomorrow and pick up the likely ten or so that will come in from the days work.

I got back to work and began tearing into the camera. The circut is very VERY hackable. Within the hour I had a working prototype, with impact switch (a pen spring, and the metal shell of an erasor from a pencil). I think with a little work I could cram four of these suckers into something about the size of an m4 magazine, two on each side, so when you throw it, two will always be facing upwards.

For now I'm tripping the charge button with a screw driver, but I'll be putting in a momentary switch for that, and an on/off switch for the battery (because if the battery is in, it will constantly charge the capacitor, which with my design means the impact trigger could set it off...)

The end design will have you: Pull the flash grenade/magazine-thing, push a button to turn it on, push another button to arm and then throw (the arming button gives you a good 3-5 seconds before the impact switch will allow the circut to fire the bulb. )

When I get home I'll post some pictures... Maybe start a how-to thread.

Hang on, have you actually activated one of these things? Or is this still theory?

The innards for one is sitting next to me as I type (note: 1 of four which would then be wired and put into the shell of a m4 magazine).

I've got another month in Bermuda, but then I'm back in Toronto. Once I'm back there, I'll make one properly with the m4 shell and all.

For now, I'll just perfect the internals.

Keep in mind that flash bulbs are not very resistant to shocks.

True, but at the cost of... Free. Who could complain?

I will keep that in mind though, if it craps out on me without good reason.

I was watching vids of sexy GBB guns when I found this:

YouTube - New Escort Flashbang Grenade

I was completely unaware that Escort was working on this. The video was added mid-February. Seems something like the Thumper, a flash-less flashbang...but with concussive effects!

I wonder how well they work. And how expensive they run (gas).
