3 years ago, I bought Linton 6288 from ebay. Was bout $90 shipped I believe. Haven't looked back since. For the price, it's hard to get something better.

I bought a GMRS bubble pack (Cobra) instead of UHF for one reason: it comes as a set, therefore I can use it outside of airsoft for casual comm, or share the spare set with a teammate.
To be fair, for fields the size of FR, and for mostly listening in (as opposed to regularly communicating) on team channel, higher end bubble packs are adequate. UHF are still superior all around as far as performance goes, but for those that do not have a use for them outside of airsoft, they may seem less "functional". Still, I think about retiring my GMRS for UHF all the time. P.S. I'd recommend Motorola over Cobra, if only because Motorola have better OEM and aftermarket headset support.

Agreed! Plus the TalkAbout line has the mini usb port which is very handy for in-car charging.

I know a few people that would be in for some orders from them if we can get them to work with FRS/GMRS plugs (I myself use Talkabouts and Garmin Rhinos, so that is two different connectors right off the bat).
