Terracat all the way Walter. Although, a bit more green like Droc said would be good.

I think people are choosing the greener patterns first because of when they'll be released. For the most part we've found that primarily tan and brown patterns such as Multicam and Terracat have nothing to blend in with during the lush summer months, and only become truly effective in the autumn when everything begins changing to those colors. Leafless bushes and trees combined with dead yellow grasses, with the occasional holdout splotch of green, make for a perfect environment for either pattern.
I chose Gaia first because I think it would work best in central Manitoba summer, when the first pattern is set for release. Highland is very nice as well but I feel it's more suited to rockier areas where you're more likely to encounter heavier ground-level shades of brown and grey such as the Canadian Shield or the Rockies. That's not to say we don't have that out here but primarily the prairies are grassland and deciduous woods and I get the impression Highland may work better in coniferous environments. I'd love to try the Vampire pattern for CQB and outdoor night games. |

Well I tried what Droc said... A blend between HIGHLAND and TERRACAT. I had to do some tweak, but It quite acceptable for a sim. Anyway, here's the new MUDCAT. I put the 2 contenders aside... Tell me what you think.

It looks fantastic, I'm excited to see how it works out in the field. Once the website reopens I'll have to look into it.

MUDCAT has gotten my attention, I would have voted for that one instead of highlands.

The Mudcat is an interesting blend of the two, but I'm still a firm believer that camouflage is a lot like guns - you can't get one to do everything. As there are assault rifles, sniper rifles, pistols, etc. camouflage has to be tailored not just to the environment but to the season, because a Manitoba summer looks absolutely nothing like a Manitoba autumn.
Given my experiences in the bush I find that we play in deciduous areas far into the fall season and encounter a significant amount of browns, yellows, and tans, with some areas containing large crops of birch trees with their signature white bark. Personally I feel the Terracat pattern is perfect for this condition as it is, and while the Mudcat does have a good look to it I feel it would be a bit too time-specific in its application. Just as the leaves are turning and beginning to fall you still have green in the bush, but this part of the season passes relatively quickly so theoretically you'd be transitioning from something like Gaia or Highland, to Mudcat, to Terracat in a short period of time, so the cost to "time worn" ratio would be a lot higher than the others. I would prefer to go straight from Gaia/Highland to Terracat myself and avoid an intermediary. This picture of me at the MAA's FNG Day in October (?) 2006 highlights what our typical autumn looks like, as well as the obvious disadvantage of having a camouflage not tailored to the season. Cool pattern though, eh? This is of course my personal opinion only, and applicable only to the areas that *I* play in. Others may find Mudcat would work not as an intermediary but as a primary pattern for their fields. However opinions were solicited, so there's mine. |

Here... I just put 3 CP Armor on the picture. TerraCat prove to be the most effective.

Cool, just as I suspected. I would really like to go with Gaia for spring/summer, and Terracat for autumn. At the moment my team uses tigerstripe for autumn because it is available locally and works very well.
This also illustrates readily why the first release pattern should NOT be something that is effective mainly during autumn - a season which is more than a half year away - and explains why Gaia and Highland are leading the poll. I'm a little disappointed that Gaia isn't quite neck and neck but I suppose people have already got their CADPATs if they need the lush greens and are yearning for something different. Unfortunately I suspect most people are voting on the poll based on whatever looks cool rather than viewing it practically in terms of what would be effective at their play fields, and when. I suppose for the moment it's more of a fashion show for a lot of people. Walter, have you got any estimated price range for a BDU set at all? I'm sure that's been asked and I'm not looking for firm figures, but do you know if it will be like $50 per piece or more like $100 per piece? Or...? |
