very interesting point of view , i'll keep that in mind for sure. I have one full summer to actually get myself used to the sniper role , reading , viewing VHS and , of course , playing. I'll study pretty much everyday and will form myself to be a sniper first but then try to be a good anti-sniper since this role attracts me a lot more.

thanks for the very useful infos !

This might seem like a strange suggestion and people are free to disagree, but try playing snipers in some good FPS, especially ones with a good sniper system. I got a fairly good appreciation of sniping/counter-sniping from primarily playing a sniper on most FPS, particularly from my Tribes days. Them light armour was as fragile as glass and to avoid enemy detection I'd often walk or skim-ski most of the way to the enemy base on the most absurdly long but concealed routes possible. Depending on the server's mod, firing off my sniper rifle kills my ability to run away and can yell to half the map where I am, so it was really one-shot, one-kill, or some getting an explosive root canal. Also taught me a fair bit on the importance situational awareness, especially for other snipers; they're often no more than a few out-of-place pixels, but those few out of place pixels might have you in their sights. Like people have said, snipers have only two real natural enemies: other snipers, and being stepped (or more unfortunately, peed) on.

It's not airsoft sniping but it should at least start you down the right path.

Well, you might be uber leet at some game, and be extremely mediocre on the field.

In a game, you can't afford to make an ambush verylong before you are booted from the server for camping.

In airsoft, it's more complicated compared to a game. You have to deal with the opfor, yourself, the field and the bugs.

Not to mention the inability of an exit sign holding up a person makes all the difference in the world....

I never said I was uber leet, I was only passable even at my best.

And yeah, some servers do boot people for camping, but it's a legitimate strategy! I miss the good ol' days when sniping didn't make you a leper, oh wait, people have always hated being sniped at.

I did say a FPS is no airsoft, I merely suggested games as a useful light primer. You snipers are just fortunate that we live in a country with relatively few poisonous and hostile critters.

Slick (I think it was slick) got a very nasty surprise when he was walking through the bush at Deadlands/DragonOps, whatever you want to call it now.

He heard something below him (under his foot) and looked down, to see a mk23 pointed at his forhead, he had quite literally steped on SnakeEyes, and he got mercied for it. (if I remember correctly, he was following someone else, who steped on Snake first, and though it was a log, and kept going, making Slick the poor bastard who 'got it' because Snake didn't want to reveal his position to him, when he mercied the first guy right in front of him.

I definately am playing some FPS ( like BF 2 ) but I never tought it could be helpful for my airsoft role. If you say so , Saint , I'll keep an eye on my FPS gameplay.

Best way to "counter-snipe" would be to learn as much about "sniping" as possible.

The reasoning being that the more you know, the more you can look out for and "think" like the guy who's stalking your team, and the more likely you can be pro-active (or at least effectively reactive) against their techniques.

I was given the impression that sniping has alot to do with tactics before it even comes down to the gun you use, so it seems sensible to work on the techniques before deciding on a gun.

Torn: Your story reminds me of a short skirmish I had at the field near my house - I didn't get stepped on, but very close, and I almost gave one of the players here a poke in the thigh with my Benelli and whispered mercy. He was kindof in shock about it, so he didn't say anything, and while the guy behind him was trying to figure out what was going on, he got 3 in the chest 8) .

Ah yea - and Saint - I don't think people hate being sniped as much as people hate being sniped by someone running full-steam-ahead. A big, huge rifle isn't a damned assault weapon.

nope, it was 2 diferent occassions, wut happened was slick n his team opened up on us n i dove for cover while my fire team got away. slick n his guys sprayed my position but the bush was too thick.
slick advaned to find me laying on my back, socom in his face, we called it a double mercy but fudge did they scare the shlit out of me.

the other was a group in fleck ran across my flant n a heavy guy in fleck who was on six, stepped on my leg n stop for a breif second then took off again
with his fire team. that hurt but yup, i didnt move or mercy any of them, i would of been pasted.

i guess im ok with being a sneaky bastard (at 6'1"). but man do i luv ambushing suckers.
