I just got pulled over outside a friend's house a couple weeks ago. It was about 2:30am and we just finished playing a day of airsoft, I just left his house, my friend was following in a van behind mine out in cottage country, and two cops came out of nowhere and pulled us both over. Initially they were looking for a few kids (assuming they were kids) lighting outhouses on fire, but when they saw me with my camo pants and face paint, they started questioning me. He asked what I was doin with the face paint on, so to escape a lengthly answer, I told him we were playin paintball (everyone knows paintball), but when he asked me to open the trunk where my guns were, I explained to him about airsoft, politely told him not to freak out, that they looked real, and opened my trunk. He opened my backpack which had my SIG 552, and questioned the dummy rounds, so I showed him the bb's, how the mag worked, and told him how the gun worked, and the whole time he never questioned whether or not I should have it locked up. I had my M16 in one of my bass cases and they were cool with that too. "What's in the guitar case?" Officer Friendly asked. It took all my strength not to be a smartass and quote Desperado. Now they were on the hunt for vandals, so we were not their main problem, but I'm sure they would have made some sort of stink if I was transporting my guns in an improper fashion.

nice storey, and you even taught police how to use a mag, how nice. all the noobs can learn from this. Did anything happen to your freind?

Well lets just make the facts simple. You do not need a gun lock nor a gun case at all. Doing so IS a good idea and makes you look all the more responsible, but THERE IS NO LAW REQUIRING THIS....very simple....nuff said.

Technical transport laws, and I should know by now...
Real guns; trigger lock or similar device. If trigger cant be locked, disassembly is an option. Guns are then placed in a locked container (nobody specifies if it has to be hard or soft, just locked), and put in the trunk of the car. If a trunk is not available, under cover in the hatchback is fine.

Airsoft? There are no transport rules. None.

However, it's common sense to at least remove the mags (if there are any) and cart the guns around in a locked container or something discrete that does not scream 'gun' to any onlooker. Trigger locks are not mandatory. A locked case is not mandatory either, but a darned smart idea in general.

Police searches? That depends on what they are looking for and how they ask. If they do intend to search, please tell them there is an airsoft gun (fake) in the case, vaguely what kind/type, and be awfully polite. They may not have a legal right to cuff you and take you away, but you'll have to argue that from jail.

Greylocks has it right. There are no such laws or regulations for the points you've listed. The officer is incorrect. If he wants to make up stuff and arrest you that's fine, but you can sue the municipal force after he does so.

Again, to be clear, you dont HAVE to lock them up. But doing it anyway IS a good idea.
So dont take our answers as a final one.
If a lock will make the cops happy, I'll use a lock. However, in my case, I think they stopped caring.
