Cold bluing turns rusty brown

I believe that heating it in the oven (low heat) while the cold bluing is still reacting with the metal will cause it to darken significantly. That's hearsay though, I haven't tried it myself.

Never had a problem with cold bluing pot metal. Here's a Colt 45 and a Winchester 1866 replica before and after, we used BWC Perma blue. You do need to wire wool the protective coat on the pot metal first.

I did it with heat, torching.
