Test fire - gun started smoking?

DO NOT CONNECT A NEW BATTERY.

The puff of smoke happened because the battery was shorted as soon as you plugged it in. It probably melted one of the flimsy tabs linking the cells inside the battery.

Do you have a multimeter or even one of the current checking for AC use? You need to confirm that there is no short in your gun before continuing.
Check for connection between both battery wires (on the gun side) with the meter at "Diode/continuity" (Little triangle with a line across on the meter).

Working on a UMP is quite similar to a G36C... not a big pain. You can find some instructional videos online.

If you are not sure, contact a local gun doc. I live quite a bit far for you to send it to me.. (Montreal area, in Quebec)

Truth hurts. If you own a Volt meter or know anyone that has one please grab it. Once you have it you want to check the Ohm's on the Battery and the Wires. This will show you if there is an obstruction. If there is an obstruction you will need to replace either the wiring or the battery.

I think my father actually has a volt meter, I mean I could use it, but i have no idea what type of read out i'd be looking for

Ask your dad to give you a hand checking for a short in the gun. As Kos-Mos says you just need to put the volt/mutlimeter into Ohms or Resistance measurement mode. Measure the resistance on your gun. There should be full resistance (ie nothing is making it through from black to red) when you connect the multimeter terminals to the gun's battery connector. If you depress the trigger with the terminals still connected this should change and the meter should read 0 ohms of resistance. If it reads 0 ohms resistance regardless of you pulling the trigger or not then there is a short somewhere in the gun that you must repair.

The comment about it not being LiPO is prudent, batteries will heat up and catch fire/explode when shorted it. It's good you removed it as soon as you did otherwise you might not have a gun at all right now!

Get someone with experience working on AEG's to have a look at it for you if you're still stumped and can't correct the problem yourself.

Im going to order that one, but I have no idea what type of connector my battery is. Im pretty sure its the mini type. I also noticed this battery I plan to buy is nicad - the one i was using was nimh. I've also read that NiMH is better than nicad, and nicads have to be discharged as well.

I'll just throw in my input here to make u feela little better - gun is almost certainly OK - battery is however almost certainly toast - from everything u described the battery shorted on itself when u forced it into the compartment and only then - if the gun has a short the batt would have started to go bad as soon as u plugged it in lol - trust me I've done it myself and worked ona number of guns with shorts in the internals and ht ebattery would not have waited to fry - would've happened as soon as u plugged it in, had it been a short inside the gun

You can also use a 9.6v double stick, using some 2000mAh 4/5A Elite cells, 16ga wire and small tamiya connector for airsoft (black and red are reversed). That is amongs the top you will be able to fit in your gun.

Otherwise, you can take the body apart, file/cut the battery retainer moldings and use a 5000ish LiPo battery pack... but don't if you don't know what I am talking about or how to properly maintain LiPo....

I've actually read about going inside the UMG shell and dremeling down the..well for a lack of a better word..tabs that hold the battery in place, apparently this frees up a lot of room for the battery to have easier access.

Lipos are pretty heavy tho...I mean they pack a huge punch, Ive read that the only thing you should be putting into a g&g is a 9.6v at most.

I'm going to open'er up today after work and see what all this room inside talk is about. I knew this problem existed with the umg battery slot before buying it but didnt think that it was this huge of an issue.

With the old 8.4v I burned out, it was a stick type battery and fairly long, its like it would fit in and slide all the way to where ever it was supposed to but the wires on the end where it connects were just enough to stop the latch door from closing - which wouldn't let my stock close. I tried 'smushing' the connectors to the side and up and down and just tried to fit them..thats when they started smoking.

I might go with that one 9.6v thats at airsoft gi.

just because its already custom made, i might not have to do any work and I like the 1650mah battery life it comes with.

I like this idea actually, except when I went to make my own I got stuck at where it asks me what cell types I want.

I've emailed them and referred them to that site I linked, hopefully that can give them idea of what im after.

IMO anytime you buy a used gun its always best to buy a new battery or use one that you know you have used before. Not bagging on sellers of stuff just mean shit happens.

Anyway you gun should be good, you said you unplugged it right away to that a good thing but your battery is more then likely fried.

I would come up and give you a hand or make you a new one but I am in Montreal right now and not sure when I will be back in town.

I know your pain though cause I know you want to come down and spit some BB's down range.
