i use the icom s and they are milspec rugged and are the same as the inter squad radios

Our Team/Club radio is the Icom F21GM. Also, I have an F43GT, the same unit as what the US Military have bought as part of their 'military bundle'.

As far as reliability, easy of use and coverage goes, we couldnt ask for anything more. Superb!!

Most people use FRS/GMRS Radios. Thats why we use Cobras, they are relatively cheap, good range and the other players who use FRS/GMRS radios can communicate with us.

If I'm ever at a game again where the organizers declare that an FRS or GMRS channel will be used, they'll have to find another way to get in touch with me.

There's nothing I hate more than hearing roger-beeps, open mics and idiots with no concept of comms protocol jamming up the channel and making it useless for everyone.

Code a good UHF radio with ONE or TWO FRS/GMRS channels solely for interop, and use private channels for everything else.

Note that you'll need to

a) find someone who will do it, since it's technically illegal
b) pay for said service.

-or-

a) purchase the programming cables and RIB box
b) find a boat-anchor 386 to run the software on or risk frying the cmos on the radio
c) acquire the software which is almost impossible.

Sabers are GREAT radios because they're idiot proof, tough, and don't have all the useless shit on them that makes traditional FRS and GMRS a pain in the ass.

The Saber's have been discontinued however, and most of the commercial users have moved to Astro's or something more recent. They're old tech, but they serve our purposes very well. The problem is that accessories and programmers are hard to find. At least there's still plenty of batteries available for them though.

Remember that they're BIG and they're HEAVY. You won't lose the thing because you'll notice when a five pound brick tumbles out of your kit

For someone who doesn't want to deal with having to program it though, look into the Chinese/Korean clones that allow for on-the-fly reprogramming.

My old radio (an FTG450a) lets me punch the channels in right on the keypad, removing the need use f*** with all the rib cables and programming.

Luckily, my equipment officer programmed my Motorola HT1250+ with our ERT's Trunk & Simplex channel, as well as a handful of GMRS and FRS channels.

I'm with Morb though. I hate dealing with all of those stupid beeps and shit that come along with using consumer FRS'es. People need to learn to TURN IT OFF. (also, owning permission to use a REAL frequency means that no one else will be on your frequency within 100km of you. It's the way the Canadian Government organizes it. If there's a conflict, they'll give you a new frequency.)

It's not too expensive. ~100$/year for a small handful of radios I think? and a one-time set-up fee.

Well got my new radio..it came to 47.39 delivered to my door..its a clone from asia, but seems to look more rugged than any of the FRS/GMRS radios I have owned. It is PC programmable, but i did not buy the software and cable; although he did have it. Anyway manually programmed all the FRS/GMRS frequicies and there CTCSS codes in about ten minutes.

Motorola Sabers, Uhf models are great. Programming can be difficult. They are available on Ebay and at Spantek in Burlington. 20 K.M. handheld to handheld is not possible, execpt valley to Mountain top. Also there are many UHF ham radios on ebay, Icom, yaesu, and kenwood are all top brands. the sabers are great as there are many surveillance tactical rigs available. These are used all over the world by real operators. Very durable, and batteries are longlasting and cheap.
