People, this was, and is, hollywood. He was trained for three months solid by a SF member on weapon combat, hand-to-hand, knife, etc. Without a doubt, he was trained trigger finger out of the trigger guard, but somewhere along the way, I strongly feel the director didn't find that as "intimidating", and made him do otherwise.
Nail-driver is the term used by "Frank's father". In the context of the movie, it represents that the gun is good, highly accurate, but nothing more then an 'old reliable tool' of the sort, and is no longer as 'appealing' or 'functional' then newer designs.
