Building custom guns
Have any of you actually build a custom gun from scratch? I mean by getting the internals and making the body using old toys and custom built parts.
I think this would be a fun project, and being new to this game it looks almost simple. As far as I can see I need a gearbox (with batteries) , hop up unit, magazine and metal barrel. I haven't taken apart any of my guns, but I figure the BBs from the magazine gets fed into the hop up, which gets shot out by the gearbox. Everything else on the outside would just be there to hold the internal parts. Is it really this simple or am I missing some important little parts that make the gun work? |

No, you're essentially correct. The problem is if you create something that resembles or is intended to resemble with near precision a firearm, but which in and of itself is not a firearm.

On the surface it seems simple, but there are variables in gearbox and body design that would make it a very daunting task.
Just the alignment between the hopup/barrel assembly and the mechbox is critical to proper function. Without a machine shop, it's not gonna run long, but that isn't a reason not to try, taking in the lagalities Morb outlined above. No Teddy Bear AEG's on the subway please!

No you cannot just "use old toys" to make the body and hold everything together. AEG's are actually fairly precision made devices that have certain fairly high tolerances.

And you almost always run into unforeseeable problems if you dont know what your doing. Even if you do know what your doing something always needs to be modified or changed out due to compatibility issues

As everyone already said, the barrel / hopup and mechbox have to sit in perfect alignment for it to work properly. The smallest variance can throw everything off. Even some low cost AEG bodies (older DBoys aftermarket bodies) were notorious for providing poor results because of small tolerance differences. And these were parts made for airsoft.
By all means try it, but don't be surprised to get less than stellar results.

vondnik but i think what he did is he took a bunch or armalite parts and made something out if it. also he has a machine shop to make all his custom parts :P here is a link on how to take apart guns and mechboxes http://www.mechbox.com here is a link on how mechbox works ETC http://www.mechbox.com/data/how-the-mechbox-works.html it shows you most of the inner workings of guns ETC hope that helps you out Last edited by happytit; March 10th, 2009 at 16:02.. |

Thanks for the input guys. This could work if I actually try to get it made. And that mechbox.com site was a great help!
now if anyone in the toronto area has any spare/old/broken parts to give away, let me know. I'll be glad to take 'em off your hands for ya. |

You're expecting to scratch build a mechbox with old, broken, donated parts?
And you also expect it to work? ... |

If you can come to my apartment in Montreal then I have a box of V3 mechbox looking to donate to you and see how you can make it work. I'm very curious if you can make it work then you should open mechbox works shop.
