Reconditioning CF issue 'Mukluks'

Just acquired a "new" (unused, but obviously late 1980s vintage according to the liner) issue mukluks, and the rubber has turned yellow. Is there any way to whiten the rubber on them without damaging the integrity of the rubber itself?

Toothpaste might do it, otherwise a toothbrush and bleach...

Yes. Take them to supply and exchange them.

Lol, I like that answer!

Hazard said to try bleach, I wasn't sure if it's fuck the rubber somehow. I did think toothpaste, I posted this thread just before leaving work so I wasn't able to try anything or even read here. Will try toothpaste and see what happens, then try bleach.

Let us know what works and next time don't pee uphill while standing knee deep in snow.

I wonder if a commercial cleaner like OxyClean might do it? It's gotten all kids of stain out of my clothes and it really does make whites....whiter....

It wouldn't work with the rubber though, that's why I had said toothpaste or bleach.

Used whitening toothpaste, more or less got rid of the yellow glaze (like it just got roughed up) but still let it a bit yellowish, not too bad though. Just tested it on the toe of one boot. More or less I'm concerned about the orange spots around where they sealed the rubber and nylon together (and the back of one heel is a bit more orange than yellow). Have to try more toothpaste on that. Semi-gloss yellowish white is better than glossy yellowish white, but the orange spots............. ick.

When I was on my battle school I used a cleaning brush (like a polish brush but rougher) and soapy water. It took a little scrubbing but it cleaned it up pretty good.

Take them in one at a time and you get lucky you'll have 2 pair.
