Idea for an m14.. Input please.

Hey.. I'm looking into creating a heavily upgraded counter-sniper moblie variant of an M14.

Instead of doing the whole longer inner barren hidden in the silencer I'm looking to increase the outer barrel length by adding some sort of tubing (Metal) by making it so it'll screw on nicely to the flash hider threading.

Am I going to run into any problems with a 650mm Tight bore and a TM M14?

Aaand can anyone get me the length of the visible outer barrel on TM M14?

Where can I get a 14mm Tap and Dye set from?

Would I be better off just replacing the entire outer barrel?

(Note: I havn't taken an M14 apart before... So I'm 100% Clueless to its inner-workings)

Why not just get a 509mm tightbore? M14s are pretty damn accurate as it is, I don't think you're going to see a big improvement with a 650mm.

i agree, if it's stock, get a tightbore or a twist barrel. Twist barrel is good if you plan to keep it under 330 FPS

average cost here in canada for a 14 mm + or- thread is around the $250 mark. Also read all the stickeys in the upgrade section your going to see that you will have to do a hell of a lot of work to get what you want. Also note that you will have to change the hop up system out completly as the m 14 barrel dosent come in any other lengths and the hop up has a very special way to mount to that barrel. Oh and did I mention that the fine tune, well sealed hopup system is one of the major reasons why the m-14 is so effective. I applaude your idea of changing your m14 to your liking but I would recomend that you use a gun tech with a hell of a lot of experience or start with some easier projects until you have all the info and skills required for this undertaking. I am not trying to be rude I just don't what you left with a busted gun and broken dreams

Problems:

1) The TM M14 does not use a standard barrel mount. You'll have to custom machine slots on the new inner barrel for the hop up's c-clip mounts.
The longest you can find is 510mm - Tanio Koba twist (effectiveness limited to 1J of power. Otherwise, it's just 500mm for a standard tightbore.) The only aftermarket barrels that fit the M14 is 510mm, 500mm, and SOCOM length.

2) No bore up kits exist for the TM M14. Good luck pushing more air through a cylinder designed for 500mm. I have no idea if it will work or not (but I have a feeling you can max out at 600mm.)

3) You can replace the entire outer barrel, but you'd have to have it machined from the bottom out. It'd be easier to just get a barrel extension. Lots are available. Look towards Guarder.

This isn't a project even I would attempt. The M14, although a great gun, is not the best platform to start out with, unless you have a lot of time, patience, resources, and CASH.

the tm outer barrel is actually around 6ish cm longer than the inner barrel. pdi makes an inner barrel that reaches the end of the stock outer barrel (560mm):

Would the barrel extensions act as an inner barrel (In terms of increasing the gun's range)?

No, all they would do is extend the outer barrel to allow a longer inner one.

I don't think PSG-1 barrels even work in an M14 hopup so it's kind of a wasted effort.

Again, M14s have great range and accuracy already, why not just get a regular tightbore? You would be outshooting most AEGs with a few minor upgrades. The only weapon to counter a properly upgraded and tuned sniper rifle is another sniper rifle, unless you get close.

I want to create a M14 that can out range Sniper rifles...

I'm going to be making it semi-auto only and using it as a sniper platform..

I'll have to look more into the whole M14 Hopup vs PSG1 hop...

An M14 that can outrange sniper rifles?

I don't know where you hope to go with this, but that's just not possible. A well-upgraded sniper rifle with good ammo can get kill shots at around 200-250 feet. That's range far beyond any AEG.

The whole point of BAs in airsoft is that they are far more accurate and have far more range than AEG. Maximum range for an upgraded sniper rifle with good ammo is around 250 feet (.36/.43 metal coated BBs ftw). I would say that even the most psychotically upgraded AEG in existance would probably max out somewhere between 120 and 140 feet.

As I said, throw some mild upgrades into it, and you'll have a gun that will outreach a good chunk of the AEGs out there. You're simply not going to get the performance to compete with a BA sniper at range. If you want a dedicated sniper platform, a bolt action is FAR better suited to the job.

I'm not trying to sound like an asshole, but you can only take an AEG so far.

My m14 with moderate upgrades and .25 ammo has gotten kills at 180ft-200ft. I won't lie it took more than one shot to get them but it wasn't a spray and pray deal either ( I only run semi). In the end he is right, you can only push an AEG so far but with thim, patience and planing you may acheive what your looking for without the extreme headaches of what you prepose.

Eh, I had to ballpark the distances, I suck with that sort of thing.

The point is still that with some decent upgrades you can still create a decent marksman platform, but it's a little unrealistic to expect to outrange a good bolt action. There's no need to try to create some kind of bastardized 6 foot long gun with a PSG tightbore when a standard M14 tightbore and some decent gearbox upgrades will do the same job.

I've got a SOCOM, and it's got pretty good range as a stock gun. Once they start making tightbores for it, I'll be throwing one in, and it should have even better range/accuracy.
