Sometimes in airsoft we have to be careful where we find our victories, but if we're too careful we can get run the hell over. In essence, when direct action fails and it comes down to simple numbers, who dares wins. The lone dude left over inside the dark building isn't going to come out to face the ten guys left on the other side, they'll have to go in. But rarely is there an excuse for them to lose the fight overall. Living through the game doesn't mean you're victorious, your team giving the enemy hell does.

Today I witnessed an absolute mind-boggling frustration. We were the attacking team against a small, dark building, but there are windows all around so it's a hard spot to hold. I pie'd one side and confirmed that it was clear. There were one or two opponents left inside at most. As I came around the front of the building there was three of my team stacked up outside afraid to peer through a window or even move (which may be a slightly unfare exaggeration, but you get the idea).whoever was inside was stuck on defence in the shadows and waiting for sitting ducks to stick their heads out, but he certainly wasn't coming out, we have to go in. But with each second that ticked away the closer a game loss came and every unwary player who tried to peer into the dark they moved closer to evening the odds by picking us off one by one. So I tell the others I'll go first and to line up and we're going in hard. I know I'm gonna get shot, "oh well", a win is a win. As I move forward and start putting BBs into dark edges and corners of the dark building (while keeping my chicken wings in), I pie the front window and as I'm passing by I take a shot in the back and call my hit. I turn around and what do I see? Two guys who stopped at the windows edge when I got hit, instead of going in and shooting the guy while he was looking at me.

As I go stand with the out players to watch the matches end another player charges the front door and goes crashing inside in a hale of BBs. What do the other guys do, that we're STILL posted at the front window?... Nothing. Two chances, no advancement.

In the end, there were two of them left and we lost the game. One guy hidden in the shadows and one guy who crammed himself up in the rafters and good for him, I applaud his efforts. Wasn't looking at the ceiling. That being said, if we had of worked as a team, some of us certainly would've been hit, but the guy hunkered down would've been easily dispatched and the other guy would have been discovered becoming a sitting duck for the others.

I'm not annoyed because we lost, someone has to. I'm annoyed because of the lack of cohesion and courage. Some of my favourite moments are meeting new players who decided to lay down their egos and play as one for victory, instead of a bunch of nameless guys who payed their twenty bucks (or whatever) to just throw some plastic at whatever moves, or sit in a bush too scared to move. To be fair, hindsight is twenty-twenty and looking back at a game it's easy to say we could've won if we did 'X', also I'm not ragging on the guys who stood around, we've all done it.

So what's better, being the guy who lulled his way through the game and maybe gets the final kill, or the guy who jumps on top of the tornado grenade, sacrificing himself, so his team can come out shooting? Don't be careless, but be realistic and be brave. That's how you find your victories, win or lose.

It's way more epic to kick in the door and to lead the way, then hiding until it's too late. This is a game, if you get hit you come back.

I find this scenario happens a lot with newer players. Don't be afraid to take charge of the situation to lead them in. It's difficult to breach, I've seen experienced players and teams start tripping over reach other as they get mowed down or hit hard bottlenecks in the field.

One of my favourite things to do is encourage players to push up, speak up at what they at shooting at or see, and just generally try to rally players that seem to be stuck in the rear or hunkering down in an isolated part of the field. Pulling off a successful assault will give a lot of these players more joy, positive encouragement and awesome memories then just trying to go it alone for them and me as well.

My two cents.

All the doubt in my world.

Newer players don't have the guts to do it. They're not of the mentality yet. Telling to do what needs to be done won't work without the discipline, trust, and respect.

I've been there once. Just get a grenade and sweep nothing else needs to be said other than "they're new" so you're f-ed unless they have the capacity to man up. No one wants to be cannon fodder. I've died being shot as the first man through the door 50+ times. A lot of times in the face.

Just sit tight and enjoy. Can't win them all.

When I was playing more often (and in much better physical shape; I'm a fatass now :-/) I was very regularly one to run in/up first in a scrim. Yeah I got shot up lots, but that's what respawn is for. But the team I was on did win a lot of games too... it's airsoft. Full face pro and go banzai... and have fun

I played a few MilSims with randoms, decided never to go to another one unless I was tagging with a team. Playing with people that have no initiative and don't follow you into breaching a room, its a waste of time.

I didn't start going to MilSims again until I started playing with a team that knew how to hold W and spam click MOUSE1.

Your story is basically what happened at one of the OP: Olympus Divided DAMs. We as OpFor were told by GC we had to start throwing the missions so teams could actually advance and win. OpFor decided to throw the mission by only sending one guy, it was me. I had one life and I won.

I certainly am not mad at them, but they may or may not have been new, and they most certainly were not kids. I volunteered to go first, told them the basics, all they had to do was shoot the guy. The second guy to go crashing through technically gave them an even better opportunity.

This is more advice for players than a rant. You can play how you want, but I think most of you want to go through the door and kick ass, you just need to decide to do it.

As Pesto said, he was one against a bunch and won. I've been there too. If you're stagnant and scared to move, then the likelihood of getting shot goes up, not down. If the game is 'capture the building' then you cannot do it from the outside. Which isn't a secret. I'll forgive new players, but I've also seen players on their first day tear it up as well. New, untested, or totally experienced, if you have them trapped and outnumbered then you should be like an otter with a clam, poke at their defences until you can force your way inside. Because if an experienced player is in there and you're too afraid to go in, then he'll pick you apart.

I will support a good point brought up and that's grenades. Get one if you can. You'll only need one, maybe two, and they're usually only good for indoors. Paint them bright orange (not yellow) so you don't lose them. They completely change the dynamic of breaching. Also, a bright flashlight can be very helpful, but can also give you away.

Yeah sounds like new players. I know I've frozen when advancing to a new position because I just didn't know what to do next.. Thats usually overcome quickly though by guys yelling behind you FUCKING MOVE UP! lol Though some guys look like they adjust their play style because they don't like getting shot, that one baffles me.

Well, those guys should probably be taking the lead. Pushing new players is good, but not if you're the one hiding at the rear. That being said, if you're blocking a hallway or something, that's different.

I guess my experiences are different. I find most new players like to tag along with me for a bit. When shit hits the fan it becomes hard as everyone scatters but generally speaking I can usually get a small group together pretty easily on the fly.

I have to add I don't yell obscenities often and I keep it cool with my requests, my pet peeve is having someone screaming at me to fucking do this or that. Certain scenarios and events sure I need the ass kicking if I'm slacking but at say a scrim no way Jose homie don't play that.
